1cm lump on neck

Hi :)

I'm not sure if it's okay to post this here I'm just quite worried. I've found a squishy lump, about 1cm on the side of my neck. It's been there about 6 months and hasn't changed in size. I don't have any other symptoms, I was quite ill with a cold and run down and stressed over the past few months and had quite a bad cough for a week but I was very run down and stressed. 

I thought to ask my GP and he didn't seem concerned and said he wouldn't do a blood test just because it's quite small but if it makes me feel better he can refer me to Hematology for advice. So I said yes please. Then they rang me after I left to book me in for a blood test so I'm worried they think it's something bad :( I know blood tests are routine but wouldn't he book it in initially? I'm just worried he's actually thinking it's bad but not saying anything. Any advice or experience I would appreciate so much 

  • Welcome to the forum Daisies93 although I'm sorry for the worry this lump is causing.

    I think it's only natural for our minds to overthink things when waiting for tests and results but if you can, try not to assume the worst. Easier said than done I know but I hope it helps to know that many of our members have been in similar situations so they will understand what you're going through at the moment, and hopefully you will receive some support and advice from them soon.

    Well done for asking your doctor about this lump and fingers crossed everything will be o.k.

    Hi Daisies93,

    I've been in a very similar situation and I completely understand how worried you must feel. I found a lump at the back of my neck two years ago; it started out at about 2cm and I was terrified. However, went for tests with the GP (asked for a scan to make doubly sure) and it was confirmed as a harmless cyst; this summer it started to get smaller and is now the size of a pea! 

    I think it's really good you've been to the doctor and are following up with them. I always take an unconcerned doctor as a good sign!

    Thank you lovely it's it's kind of you to reply and I'm so glad it was just a cyst for you! 

     

    That makes me feel a lot better so thank you!! I have my bloods on Tuesday so do you think it's a good idea to still ask for a scan if they come back clear? Like you say I just want to be doubly sure.

    Small squishy lumps especially on your neck sound like a classic sign of Lipoma which is just a harmless fatty lump under the skin, I'm sure everything will be fine.
