Referral to plastic surgery

Hi,

My husband had an urgent referral for moles a few weeks ago, he said he's not worried because the dr wasn't worried, but because I couldn't be there I wasn't able to ask all of the questions I would have liked to which is stressful! He got a phone call to confirm the appointment is Monday, in the plastic surgery department. We presumed it would be the dermatology department, is this normal to be seen at plastic surgery first? I'm just getting worked up that it's a really bad sign.

thank you

  • Hi Le90,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. It's good to hear that the doctor wasn't worried. It can either be a dermatologist or a plastic surgeon who examines the mole(s). Both have the relevant knowledge to assess them and work out what next steps may be required, if any.

There is some more information about this on the NHS website here and on our website here.

I hope this helps and I hope that the appointment goes OK tomorrow.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben

    Hi Le90,

There is nothing sinister in the fact that your husband is being seen by a plastic surgeon. As  our moderator, Ben, has advised either  a dermatologist or a plastic surgeon can carry out this procedure.  I have had biopsies on 3 different lesions. I saw the plastic surgeon for the one on my face, as it was just under my eye  and needed delicate surgery. I also saw a plastic surgeon for one on my leg and a dermatologist for one on my back. Fortunately, all three turned out to be benign.

I hope that all turns out well for your husband on Monday.

Please keep in touch and let us know how he gets on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you so much for taking the time to reply, we were just really surprised when we saw it and I think everything just sends me into overdrive about it. I don't handle anxiety well at all to say the least. Really glad that everything was benign for you. Hopefully it will all be the same, all just very unknown and scary right now. Xx

    Hi Le90,

The unknown is always a scary place to be. Regardless of the outcome, it is always easier to cope once you know what you are dealing with.

Please let us know how it all goes tomorrow. Keeping my fingers crossed for good news.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
