What happens after transvaginal ultrasound?

Hi everyone

im new here and this is my first post. My gp has referred me for a transvaginal ultrasound due to a variety of symptoms (excessive bloody or brown discharge - so heavy that I have to wear panty liners which is completely unusual for me, different types of pains, unusual/unpleasant smell). My biggest concern is cervical cancer.

I just wondered, is there a standard practice for next steps if nothing is found during a transvaginal ultrasound? Will the patient automatically be referred to gynaecology for more tests? I ask because I've read from multiple sources (including this forum) that a transvaginal ultrasound doesn't usually pick up on cervical cancer? I'm worried that if nothing is picked up on during the ultrasound I'll just be told nothing is wrong and be given no further tests, which will cause so much stress and worry in case I do have CC but it's just not been found.
I haven't seen my GP in person due to covid restrictions (only spoken to him on phone).
Has anyone else been through this and can tell me what the average procedure/protocol is? Thanks so much in advance. X

  • Hello Lyns1991

I'm sorry to hear that you're dealing with some ongoing health concerns at the moment. It's understandable that you're feeling anxious about what may be causing your symptoms.

It's good to know that your GP has already referred you for an ultrasound and hopefully, this will shed some light on what's going on for you. With regards to what the next steps may be after that appointment, it's difficult to say but do discuss your concerns with your GP.

Alternatively, if you'd like to chat things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm for some advice and support.

I do hope things settle for you soon.

    Best wishes,

  • The transvaginal scan showed my ovarian cysts, l had been sent for the scan by gynaecology oncology and the results went back to the clinic, l had a colonoscopy and they referred me to gynaecology your scan will be reported on by a radiologist and if there's a problem they should send you to the correct department, your G P will also get the results. I was rung by the X-ray dept within a week  and told the results of my colonoscopy and that l had been referred to gynaecology.
I hope you are seen soon by gynaecology and they can help you.
