Scared about Bowel Cancer (Family History & Symptoms)

Hi everyone,

I recently went to the GP with 10 days of unusual bowel movements, mucus in my stool, trapped wind, and a feeling of pressure/fullness in my stomach. I'm nauseous (but not being sick), cold, and have a real lack of appetite. I'm male, 32 years old, and apart from being overweight/obese, I'm usually in good health. I've never had anything like this before, but my mum was diagnosed with bowel cancer when she was 59.

From my memories of her initial symptoms, I feel like I'm going down the same path. The GP did a physical examination of my abdomen. I never seem to get any pain in my lower abdomen, but in my central/upper abdomen. I had a full blood count down and a test for H pylori, and both came back absolutely normal.

All day every day I've been experiencing these stomach cramps and trapped wind, which are made worse with eating. I'm absolutely terrified my symptoms are being caused by a partial bowel obstruction. I don't have any lower abdominal discomfort, but a feeling of fullness or constipation in the area directly above my belly button. I often have stomach gurgling and trapped wind but I feel like I can't pass wind unless I'm lying down.

I really don't know where to go from here, I'm absolutely terrified. Any advice or comments would be sincerely appreciated.

  • Hello Paul_14

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently had some health problems. it's understandable that you're feeling anxious particularly as your Mum had a diagnosis of bowel cancer.

It's good to hear that you've already seen your GP and that so far the tests you've had haven't given any cause for concern.

There could be many reasons for the symptoms that you're experiencing and it's possible that the level of stress you're experiencing is contributing to those as well. Do get back in touch with your GP and let them know that things haven't settled as they will be best placed to support you.

If you want to chat through your concerns with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

I do hope things settle for you soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Jenn,

Thanks for the words of reassurance. I did follow this up with my GP who has asked me to do a qFIT and Fcalc test, and I'll hear back next week. The two most concerning symptoms are the constant feeling of trapped wind/bloating in my upper abdomen, and the unusual bowel movements.

I did take an over-the-counter self-test kit (guaiac FOB) which came back negative, and I confirmed with my GP that I'm not anaemic. It's been less than 2 weeks since I first noticed symptoms so I'm fortunate that my GP has been very proactive so far.
