Possible colon examination options

Hi everyone,

I am a 22m who has has an abnormal result on both FIT and calprotecin tests. Due to this I had been put on a 2 week pathway. My doctor has not informed me on what this means but after doing some research it seems to mean I will need a colonoscopy. My question is, is there any other procedure or could opt for? Possibly a scan or one of them camera pills? And had anyone here opted for a different procedure? I am very uncomfortable with the idea of having a colonoscopy, and I know it's important but I don't feel like I could go through with it. Thanks in advance, I don't want to seem ridiculous but I just can't get past the thought.

  • Hi Jdog,

Let me tell you from the perspective of a cervical cancer survivor. I came to realize that there is no reason to be embarrassed and the doctors/nurses are used to seeing all our private parts. I got so used to them looking at my "parts" that  I'd joke that I would probably drop my pants in the dentist's office, lol. By the time I got around to having a colonoscopy, it was no big deal. You are covered up, they typically give you something to either put you out or almost out. I didn't remember anything of my procedure until I woke up and the nurse asked if I could pass gas. I ripped off a big one and they released me!

So the moral of my story is just do it. If you try some alternate methods they will likely end up recommending the procedure anyway!  Hope this helps alleviate your concerns.

    Good luck,

    Laura xx

  • Thank you for the reply,

first I would just like to say I'm happy to hear you beat cancer but I'm sorry to hear you had to go through it. I will try my hardest to push myself to do it, I have just never been good with medical stuff. Since my stool tests came back positive it's all happening so quick it's hard to process, but I really do understand it's for my own good. I had to have a blood test last Friday which was a real struggle but also an accomplishment for me since I fainted on my last one and had been terrified of them since. The days following up to it I could barley think straight but I do feel a lot better since I've got past that.
I will take your advice and and try my hardest to push myself to do it just like the blood test. Thank again for the reply, I find it hard to talk to friends and family about this so this forum and the people on it really has helped with my questions over the past weeks:). Take care.
