Waiting for colonoscopy due to abnormal FIT and calprotectin

Hello all

Have been having different bowel habits for almost 2 years and have had low iron levels twice in that time(last time discovered recently). The calprotien stool test at that time almost 2 years ago was normal, so thought no more of it.

Feeling very tired again so saw the doc suspecting iron was low again, which it was. Doc advised doing the stool tests. So I did the FIT and calprotien stool tests  and both have come back abnormal.

Currently waiting on an urgent colonoscopy and freaking out.

Anyone have any experience similar to this?  I'm 35 and mum to 2 very young children

  • Hi Bluebell,

Ive recently had similar at age 34, minus the anemia. I had bright red, fresh rectal bleeding and increased mucus since July 2021, so I went to the doctors who could feel inflammation upon examination and referred me for more tests. I had an abnormal fit (>200ug) and raised fecal calprotectin (>58ug). My blood tests were all normal, minus a slightly raised serum ferritin level (152 was regarded as a minor abnormality). I went for a colonoscopy on 26 November where they found two small polyps and a larger sessile polyp which measured 18mm in my rectum. I was advised during the test that I don't have bowel cancer, and my follow up on the colonoscopy report reads that I don't have bowel cancer. However I have just been asked to come in for a CT scan, I'm not sure why and rather confused and worried about it.

Just remember that there are many different reasons why you might be experiencing your systems - from IBD, to hemmorhoids, to polyps- there are so many more common reasons than cancer. I've found the waiting for tests and results to be the hardest (as well as the lack of info you get at each stage!) so definitely try and keep yourself busy. It's pointless getting yourself anxious before you know what you are dealing with (I should listen to this myself!)

    Hope my experience helps.

  • Hi Betty

    Thank you for your reply.

That's reassuring to hear your positive outcome.

I guess they have booked you for a CT scan just to be in the safe side? Did they remove all your polyps?

I'm just so worried as the low iron and different stools have been for 2 years now (unbeknown to me for the middle part). I have not seen any fresh blood at all l, so it was a shock to received the fit result of 102ug and the calprotien of 188ug. The numbers being so high just completely panic me.

Yes I think that's defo the problem the waiting and the unknown. I'm.doing my best to keep busy but the quiet moments are when the thoughts run wild and panic sets in.

How long do you have to wait for your CT? Hope.you don't have to wait too long and you can keep yourself busy xx
