Waiting for first appointment at breast clinic

Hi I'm new to this site. It looks a very supportive forum and I know will be better than my incessant googling. I'm aware many of you are much further along the journey. I have a sizeable lump in my right breast, I'm 48. My GP said she was hopeful it is a cyst as it felt circular but that she would keep her fingers crossed for me.  It's between the size of a walnut and lime so pretty big and at the bottom to outside of my breast. I'm obviously terrified that because of it's size if it is cancer it won't be good news. I'm finding the waiting absolutely unbearable and I'm struggling sleeping. Because of its size I find it really hard to not think about and it also feels very achy.
My apointment is on the 21st December and I understand they will do biopsy and mammagram etc and then it will be around a week for results - depending on Christmas/ New Year.  At the moment I'm thinking of every possible worst case scenaro. I'm always a very pro active patient and often an advocate on behalf of family members and feel so helpless at the moment. In terms of questions to ask on the 21st any pointers would be appreciated. Also any top tips on how to switch off a very worried mind. Many thanks and sending much love to you all

  • Hello,

I was in the same place 7years ago, it's really tough, and I remember how worrying it was.  I think the waiting for these appointments is the worst bit and once you know what you're dealing with, in some ways becomes clearer in terms of the path forwards.  Everything crossed that you will be okay.  I found that exercise and also reading (finding stuff that was really absorbing/page turning) helped.

    Thinking of you tomorrow,

    Vickie xx

  • Home from my apt.

I was firstly seen by the doctor, who examined me. He said given no family history of Bca and my age he isnt concerned but he was sending me for an ultrasound for reassurance.

The sonographer felt the lump and said she thought it was a cyst. She found the lump on ultrasound and she said the shape didn't signify a malignant lump and she was going to try needle aspiration to see if it would drain, but it didn't.

In the end I've had two core needle biopsies taken, most likely cause is a fibroadenoma but won't know for sure until the new year probably. Relieved to have today out of the way, still feel as though it won't be good news but I'm not dwelling on this, I just have a tendancy to prepare for the worst, just my coping mechanism I think.

Hope you all have positive experiences today at your clinic apts....everything crossed for you xx

  • Hi thanks for updating us. From what your saying it sounds very positive and fibreadenomas are extremely common . Just wanted to ask how was the biopsy ?  How long were you in your appt ? Was anybody allowed in with you x.

    take care

  • My husband waited in the car, I did see someone with a partner but the nursing staff were definitely discouraging it.

I was there for two hours in total ( was told to expect it to take 4hrs) she tried to drain it at first, this was a little uncomfortable, but only like having an injection. The biopsy was fine, she gave me local anaesthetic and I couldn't feel a thing. I'm either still numb from it or not in pain at all. I have a few steri strips and plaster over it, think it will just be bruised...no lifting for 48hrs.

Hope that helps, the waiting is definitely a tough time.

  • Thank you so much im Just so scared at the moment and can't stop shaking with worry. I've still got one and a half days.

    lots of hugs

  • Hi I'm just home from my apointment. It's good news and I have the all clear. I feel so very grateful. I was examined by the consultant who said she thought the lump was a cyst and then I had a mammogram and an ultrasound which confirmed that I had two cysts, one of which was 5cm. The cysts were drained which was slightly uncomfortable.
I was advised that they can come back and to get them checked out again if this happens.
Thanks for everyone's support on here it has helped so much during the waiting period. Sending much love
