Waiting for first appointment at breast clinic

Hi I'm new to this site. It looks a very supportive forum and I know will be better than my incessant googling. I'm aware many of you are much further along the journey. I have a sizeable lump in my right breast, I'm 48. My GP said she was hopeful it is a cyst as it felt circular but that she would keep her fingers crossed for me.  It's between the size of a walnut and lime so pretty big and at the bottom to outside of my breast. I'm obviously terrified that because of it's size if it is cancer it won't be good news. I'm finding the waiting absolutely unbearable and I'm struggling sleeping. Because of its size I find it really hard to not think about and it also feels very achy.
My apointment is on the 21st December and I understand they will do biopsy and mammagram etc and then it will be around a week for results - depending on Christmas/ New Year.  At the moment I'm thinking of every possible worst case scenaro. I'm always a very pro active patient and often an advocate on behalf of family members and feel so helpless at the moment. In terms of questions to ask on the 21st any pointers would be appreciated. Also any top tips on how to switch off a very worried mind. Many thanks and sending much love to you all

  • Hi lovely,

thanks for messaging. All ok. Phew. When I arrived they sent me for another mammogram before I'd even seen anyone... they had been waiting for me to arrive to send me straight  up to X-ray ...But, on my left breast not the one with the lump. Then had an ultrasound too.
the lump is just a cyst and possibly from my HRT, so thankfully that's ok. They said they spotted some things on my left breast they will want to keep an eye on in case they change but nothing to worry about at the moment.
I've cried relief this afternoon. Wishing you the best for your appointment, please let me know how your get on xxx

  • So pleased for you. Now you can have a good Xmas .

  • KatPT Been busy interviewing at work today but I've been thinking about you. So pleased that you have positive news and that they told you then and there.  I can imagine the relief is quite overwhelming after all the worry and waiting. I'm on countdown - six more sleeps to go! Didn't ever think Id be using an advent calendar to count down the days for a hospital apointment! Hope you have a lovely Christmas xx

  • OReilly sorry to hear that you too have a lump and awaiting appointments. My understanding of the two week pathway is that you should be seen within two weeks. I'm so sorry to hear that you had such a difficult experience when phoning up. I think it's worth trying again. It's hard enough to manage when you know the date of your apointment. There was someone on this thread who had a very good experience of going private - they were seen the same day, had the tests and received the all clear.  I think it starts getting more complicated if they find anything cancer related as treatment isn't usually covered by private healthcare. I think it's worth pursuing as it's likely that you will be seen quicker. Hope you get an appointment date soon- please let us know how you get on xx

  • Hi Dom. Sorry  to hear that you are in the same situation.
It's never a good time and difficult to focus on the Christmas celebrations. It's a good distraction I suppose. Hope you get your apointment through soon. I got a text the next day after seeing my GP so hopefully you won't be waiting long for the date of your apointment x

  • Thanks for the information about nhs v private. I am pleased to say I got a private appointment on the 17th. I did phone my doctors surgery to ask about my NHS referral and she agreed with the hospital that i wouldnt hear from them for two weeks but took my details when i explained everything said to contact the hospital if i hadnt heard from them by the 15th. She phoned the hospital to chase up my apt and called me back to say i would hear from them with an apt offering before 5pm today & let her know tomorrow if they hadnt been in touch. I never heard from them in the end which was disappointing but luckily my health insurer was able to make a private apt for me without a referral (again lucky because my doctor is out until friday). It took three hours of calls but I am just relieved to have a date.

  • You are welcome. That's  really good news that you have an appointment on the 17th and that your healthcare covers it, sounds like three hours well spent.  I really wish I'd pursued the private option with my GP but I was in a bit of a state and trying to hold it together. Wishing you lots of luck for your apointment on Friday. X

  • Thank you so much !  Well I received a text but it actually said there are delays for up to 6 weeks due to Covid :( I just really hope it's nothing sinister x

  • So sorry to hear that your apointment is delayed because of Covid. Did your Gp say that you would be on the two week pathway? Hopefully it is just a standard text they are sending everyone and you will hear something soon. I have found the waiting really hard but then I know as my apointment approaches my anxiety will increase significantly.
it's good to be able to share on here we are all in a similar situation and we will get through it. X

  • She did say it will be within two weeks so maybe standard text these days to cover themselves ! GP said she is not concerned and because I was anxious it is for my own piece of mind and to treat it as a regular check appointment . It made me feel a bit better ( for an hour at least ) .when is yours and what did they say at gp visit ?
