Waiting for first appointment at breast clinic

Hi I'm new to this site. It looks a very supportive forum and I know will be better than my incessant googling. I'm aware many of you are much further along the journey. I have a sizeable lump in my right breast, I'm 48. My GP said she was hopeful it is a cyst as it felt circular but that she would keep her fingers crossed for me.  It's between the size of a walnut and lime so pretty big and at the bottom to outside of my breast. I'm obviously terrified that because of it's size if it is cancer it won't be good news. I'm finding the waiting absolutely unbearable and I'm struggling sleeping. Because of its size I find it really hard to not think about and it also feels very achy.
My apointment is on the 21st December and I understand they will do biopsy and mammagram etc and then it will be around a week for results - depending on Christmas/ New Year.  At the moment I'm thinking of every possible worst case scenaro. I'm always a very pro active patient and often an advocate on behalf of family members and feel so helpless at the moment. In terms of questions to ask on the 21st any pointers would be appreciated. Also any top tips on how to switch off a very worried mind. Many thanks and sending much love to you all

    Oh Loopy,

This is fantastic news. I'm so glad to hear this. Are there any plans to monitor you regularly?

    HI Trsbrk,

There is not usually that much difference between the waiting time for private and that for NHS diagnosis and you often find that you'll see the same consultant in both. If you do happen to need further care, you are likely to have to wait to be referred into the NHS system, as ongoing treatment could prove very expensive.

Unless you are going to a one-stop clinic, you will have to wait at least a week and sometimes 2-3 weeks for the results of mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy, so I am afraid that you are likely to still have more waiting time. The reason for this is that your biopsy is sent to Pathology to be analysed. When it comes back, your consultant will meet up with his/her MDT team (multi-disciplinary team) at one of their weekly meetings. This is where they decide whether or not you need treatent and, if so, what type of treatment you are likely to need.

Most of us find it hard dealing with the unknown and our imaginations take us to all sorts of dark places while we're waiting. Fortunately, this seldom turns out to be the case. The best thing to do to try and take your mind off the wait is to keep yourself busy. Do you have a pet project or hobby that could keep you preoccupied for the next week?

I sincerely hope that your doctor is correct and that this is just a large cyst. Try to stop feeling it so often, as this will only make it sorer.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

    Hi Kels,

I am sorry to hear that you are in this unenviable situation too. It is difficult to switch off and our imaginations can take us to all sorts of dark places. Whatever the outcome may be, you, will feel better once you know what you are dealing with.

I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer in the past 12 years and I still lead a busy and fulfilled life, despite this. Breast cancer is one of the most treatable forms of cancer nowadays and only 1 person in every 8 who attend the breast care clinic will get a cancer diagnosis.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Hi DooLallyLucy,

The wait is never easy. It usually takes anything from 1-3 weeks to get your results through, depending upon the covid situation in your area. If you are under 40 the usual procedure is to have a physical examination of your breasts, then and ultrasound and possibly a biopsy. If you are over 40, you are likely to have a mammogram as well. This is not always done in younger people, as their breasts are denser and don't always show up well on a mammogram.

Breast cancer is seldom painful. I have had it twice in the past 12 years and only discovered my lumps when I was showering. I'm gld to hear that you don't have much longer to wait.

I sincerely hope that all turns out well for you.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Hi Lynnpin,

A very warm welcome to our forum. Waiting to be seen is always an anxious time. I am glad to see that you have managed to get an earlier appointment by going privately, rather than waiting until January.  You are doing the right thing by getting this checked out, no matter how scary it may be.

Here's hoping for a good outcome.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thanks for your wise words Jolamine. My work role is very busy and quite stressful so the days should take care of themselves. I have lots to do in terms of preparation for Christmas so I will try to focus on that. I'm also listening to audio books whilst doing practical tasks and driving as I'm finding it helps to keep my brain occupied.
I'm also listening to meditation for sleep when going to bed and that seems to be helping with sleep. So I'm developing a few strategies that will hopefully help with further waiting. I think my apointment is at a one stop shop type centre where all the tests are done on the same day. Are there any specific questions that I should be asking or will this come later depending on what they find.
I will let you know how I get on and want to send a big thanks to you for helping women in a similar situation to the one you were in and helping them on their journey. xx

  • Thank you for your lovely reply .  It's such a difficult time and always feel that my age is against me but then realise it happens to all ages . The wait is just horrendous . I try to keep my mind on other things but not always easy as I'm now retired from working for the NHS for 23 years , and have more time for thoughts .
Once again thank you for taking the time to respond it's really appreciated

  • Hi all. I just checked on nhs referrals and have an appointment for Thursday 23rd December at 11,00am. Still seems forever away but will have to try and keep my thoughts at bay . How are you all doing ?

    Hi Kels,

I'm glad to see that you now have an appointment. Don't worry about your age. I was 60 when I was first diagnosed.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
