Cervical cancer

Morning, I'm hoping some of you might share stories with me about cervical cancer? I've not been diagnosed but am waiting for a scan as I have so many symptoms. Getting myself in a bit of a flap and I'm sure since being told the dr wants to check my symptoms have got worse (I'm probably paranoid)

I'm 36 and a single mum to a child with additional needs. We have no family support (friends yes) here so I'm worried that it might be cancer, why else would they be checking? Has anyone else had symptoms but it turned out to be something totally different?

I don't have periods as much on the pill, at first the bloody discharge was dismissed as hormonal but it continued, got worse, lots of unpleasant smells and now real bad leg pain. It's the leg pain that scares me, that's a sign it's spread!

I was told I was being put on a 2 week referral which became 4 weeks due to covid. It's only been a week and I'm a mess. Once I've had the scan how long will I wait for results? I feel like I'm going out of my mind. Sorry for the rant, didn't know where else to go

  • Hi there

I’m sorry to see you are so worried, but it’s only natural when you don’t yet know what’s going on. I’ve been through cervical cancer twice, so I do have a fair bit of experience with it.

I’m not sure where you’re getting your information from, when you say leg pain is a sign that shows cervical cancer has spread? I had hip/leg pain, and did have cervical cancer but it hadn’t spread. If you’re using google to diagnosis yourself, I would stop as it will scare you and give you lots of incorrect information which won’t even apply to you.

What type of scan are you having done? Normally when you don’t have a diagnosis, scans will be to rule cancer out. An ultrasound scan would be used, for example, to look at the pelvic area but is not a scan used to detect cervical cancer. Is your referral specifically for suspected cervical cancer?

The symptoms you describe are not exclusive to cervical cancer and could be for many other much less serious conditions than cancer, and your anxiety could certainly be magnifying any symptoms you do have-the mind is a powerful thing.

The length of time you need to wait for scan results will depend on the hospital workloads and it seems everything is taking longer due to covid backlogs. I only had scans after my cancer diagnosis which was pre covid, and had results quickly because I already had a cancer diagnosis.

i would try if you can not to let your thoughts run away with themselves at this point before you know what is wrong, and don’t use google!

  • Thank you for replying, you're right, I have been looking on Google. I know I shouldn't. I went to the dr a few times and was told it was various things, I went back as nothing was stopping and this Dr was cross I hadn't been referred earlier. She's sending me for an internal scan, so would this be to rule out any cancer? She did say she wanted to send me to gynocology but that waiting list was longer so this was the quickest way to be seen.

  • They will be looking for an explanation of your symptoms with the scan, but given what your symptoms are, it would have seemed more logical to be seen in gynaecology. I hope it will be able to give you reassurance that you don’t have any form of cancer at all.
