Bowel polyp removed - worried

Hi

I am wondering if anyone can help as I am a bit confused. I had a 12mm polyp removed last week after an elevated qfit. I am only 24 and healthy so this was a bit of a shock. It's been sent off for a biopsy and the surgeon said it's very likely benign but I am still worried and have seen conflicting info online (I know dr Google sometimes isn't too helpful!)

I know a polyp can contain cancerous cells - but can can use actually be cancer? Ie could it in theory have already spread, or is a polyp always pre cancer (it if has cancerous cells) and if it was bowel cancer then a tumour would've been detected? I'm really confused and I know most polyps are benign but I'm convincing myself now that I've got swollen lymph nodes in my groin.

Thanks for any advice - I find out on Tuesday but any info before then would be useful

  • Hey S725,

I see you have your appointment to find out your results today so I just wanted to wish you good luck and let you know we're thinking of you.

I hope your surgeon is able to answer the questions you've asked in your post but if you feel that things haven't been explained to you properly or you have a few more questions playing on your mind after speaking with them then do feel free to give our cancer nurses a call. They're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and will do all they can to help.

Fingers crossed for good news S725.

    Kind regards,

  • Thank you very much. I have just had my call. It was benign but may have turned cancerous in a few years. Due to my young age for this the doctor has recommended that my family are also checked out in case it is genetic. I will have yearly colonoscopies going forward to check for more polyps.

  • I have a colonoscopy coming up which I am very anxious about, may I ask you two questions? I am about to turn 23 so a similar age to you. What led you to having a colonoscopy? I've been having flat stools and diarrhoea which led to a FIT and calprotecin test which both came back positive. And how did your colonoscopy go? I am very anxious about the procedure. Thanks for taking the time and I'm glad to hear that you're healthy:).

  • Hello

to be honest the prep was the worst part! You have to take a load of laxatives which I had to start taking at 5 am and then you're literally on the toilet for the next few hours  Not eating the day before and not drinking in the hours before I struggled with and had a horrible headache from it.

The actual procedure was fine. They sedated me which actually felt nice! I don't remember much of it but I could see what the camera saw on a screen which was quite interesting. They removed the polyp there and then which I couldn't feel at all. If it got uncomfortable from the camera they moved me which releived it - the discomfort feels like trapped wind. After i was drowsy but starving so was very glad to get back to my room and have a sandwich & cup of tea! That evening I was v tired and a bit the next day from the sedation but was completely fine after - no bleeding or anything.

I went to my GP with bleeding & IBS symptoms which I've had for years. I thought I had chrons or colitis. I'd never had a qfit but I did this time and it came back super high over 400 so I was referred privately for a colonoscopy. They said if I went the NHS route I would've been seen as routine and maybe not for months due to my age so I'm very grateful I got to be seen so soon.

best of luck and let us know how you get on!

  • Thank you for the reply.  hear so many negative stories about colonoscopy's if starts to put me off but im glad your experience was different. I hope I can have mine sooner rather than later as I feel the longer it takes the more anxious I get, but it will be fine. Thanks again:).
