Lumps in both breast, 2 week wait ‘delayed’

Hello,

im not sure what I want but I just needed to write on here in the hope someone who has been through similar can comment.

i am 31, mum of 2. I have under muscle breast implants (6y). I found a lump on my right breast, it's like a marble but doesn't move. Waited out my cycle and was still there so went to GP. She found this lump plus another in my left breast which I the size/shape of a capsule pill, hard and immobile. Saw GP on 8 Dec.

the gp refererred me to the breast clinic, 2 week lead time. Okay, that's normal I think to myself. She said because lumps are 'rounded' she wasn't sure what they were so wanted to get scan. They aren't 'painful' but a little tender when I touch them.

I've not heard anything re an appointment and 2 weeks is up in 2 days. I've logged onto my NHS account/app and it says there is a booking for referral on 20th Dec ( at midnight but the notes state this:

"Please note your referral for suspected cancer has been sent for clinical assessment at your chosen hospital. The assessment service creates a date for assessment of the letter (this is not your appointment date and is not the date of the assessment either). Do not attend on the assessment date, as a member of staff will contact you to book a suitable date and time for a clinic appointment"

Is it usual for the comment here to say it's a referral for suspected cancer? The GP lead me to believe it was most likely something else and she was being over cautious by sending me to the clinic.

I'm therefore confused and worried and although I appreciate covid delays etc I am driving myself crazy and I'm now convinced it won't be until after Xmas which is stressing me more!

any guidance or just a reality check would be super welcome.

Thanks

Gee :)

  • Hi Gee,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I can understand this must be unsettling and also a little confusing with the information you have seen so far.

As you have been referred to the breast clinic, technically all referrals there are for the same purpose - i.e. to determine whether or not it could be cancer. The vast majority of people who are referred will not have cancer. So try not to let the wording worry you - it's best to not assume anything one way or the other at this point, and to sit tight while you wait for the appointment to come through.

Two weeks is the target to receive the appointment, but sometimes the wait can be a little longer, particularly at the moment where there are some delays. It will very much depend on waiting times at your hospital, but if you have concerns and it's gone beyond the two weeks then there is no harm in calling to check.

If you'd like any info about what to expect at the appointment, please take a look at this page from Breast Cancer Now.

I hope you find out more soon. Wishing you all the best,

    Ben

  • Hi Gee,

Try not to worry too much although the uncertainty does make us worry more

I went to GP after discovering a lump in 26 October and they called on 16 November to book it for 18 November so 3.5 weeks for me from referral to tests but I know my Trust are dealing with a backlog.

    Xx

  • I think referrals for breast symptoms tend to be delayed as they are fairly common. Obviously, this shouldn't happen but I think the service has a higher volume of patients than other 2ww clinics.
