Left breast pain on and off.

Hi,

I am 54  and stopped my periods February this year.  I  first had breast pain in my left breast 3 years ago.  I went to the fast track breast clinic and everything was ok after mamagramm etc.  Now three year later  I  am getting the same thing. Pain in  the left breat. Its like a throbbing pain.  I have seen my GP twice now in the last 4 weeks and she has again made appt at breast clinic. She thinks its hormonal but has to make sure everthing is ok.   I am worried sick.  The Doctor cant feel anything and neither can i.  Im just thinking was the pain 3 yrs again the start of something more sinister now?? Has anybody else had this?  I have felt my breats  and they feel lumpy. I dont really know what i would be feeling for.  I cant sleep and am totally googling stuff. Has anybody had breat pain like this and it has been cancer? My anxiety is through the roof thinking all sorts. Thanks

  • Hi Anne,

Sorry to meet you here and read of your anxiety. I don't have the same experience as you with breast pain, but I wanted to respond to you to try to put your mind at ease a bit. If your GP thinks it's hormonal and you had the same experience three years ago with no cancer concerns, please try and take that as a huge positive. Additionally breast pain isn't usually associated with breast cancer and so that another positive.

I know I googled and lots of other people do, but try to refrain, most sites are outdated and inaccurate and only serve to send you into a bigger panic.

Have you got a date for the clinic yet? It's really hard waiting and the not sleeping is difficult, something I can relate to personally. Try to occupy your time with things you enjoy to give yourself a bit of a boost and be kind to yourself.

    Hope that helps a little.

  • Hi Mickey,

Thank you for your kind words of support.  My GP said she would make a non urget referral to breast clinic but i have just got the appt for two weeks gone wednesday 22 Dec.  With her saying non urgent and then getting such a quick appt im thinking did the GP feel something and has not mentioned this to me?? Mind working overtime now. My late mother and her sisiter both had breast cancer and both had a history of cyst removal.  I have had nothing  like that thankfully.  I m just thinking all sorts as you can imagine.

  • Hi Anne,

It is really positive that GP classified it as 'non urgent' as any suspicion of breast cancer and it should automatically be an 'urgent' referral and I think the stats are 8 or 9 out of those turn out to be benign. Perhaps you were just lucky that they could find a slot for you just outside of two weeks urgent referral timescale (depending on when the referral was done).

I don't know how true it is, but I have family history of cancer, but was told that once you hit 50, it's more likely to be due to your age being one risk factor than the family history.

I totally understand as I've been through it myself, but you do have a lot of positives in your favour.  Try to busy yourself in sparkle and Christmas prep or other things you enjoy.

Let me know how you get on and sending positivity your way.

  • Evening,

I don't want to panic you but wanted to share my symptoms and brief story.

I'm 44 with no family history. I've had breast pain in my left breast but very much the left of the left breast and deep in the tissue more of an ache and I put it down to hormones. Hubby then discovered a lump in breast and to cut a long story shorter I had a clinic appt and 3 lumps in my left breast were discovered as well as one in my lymph nodes and I think that is probably the source of my ache/pain but I won't know until I have the lymph node ahead lump removed as for me it turned out to be cancerous asking with 2 of lumps in my breast.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you and I'll check back for an update when you've had your appt. I know we worry (it's in our nature) but mine and hubby's mantra is to deal with it when we know for definite. Good luck xx

  • Thank you for your reply. I will post of my outcome. I've hadt two GP' s check me and they feel nothing. I'm thinking it's something though.  The pain has eased in lasst few days mind. Did you GP check u?

  • Hi,

U said u had breast pain like mine and a lump?  Did your GP find lump. Two doctors have examined me and can't feel anything. I can't feel anything except lumpy breast tissue I think. Nothing hard like  a lump. Still expecting they will find something. The pain has eased off the last couple  if day's. It comes and goes.

  • Hi Anne, my ache/pain was on/off and I think it's down to the lump in my lymph node more than my breast. I do have 3 lumps in my breast too.

I only attributed the pain after the diagnosis as I assumed it was hormonal.

Good luck at the clinic next week xx

  • Hi,

Well I had my breast appt at screening clinic. All ok. Had mamogramme and ultra sound. No sign of anything abnormal. Such a relief. I hope you r doing ok. Virtual hugs Hun,x
