  • Hi,

I was pretty much given all options also. I read all the information available and found the breast cancer now website particularly useful with their reconstruction booklet. I also tried to speak to others, as you are doing. I decided on the immediate diep flap reconstruction because I felt for me it had the better longer term outcome for me getting back to my active lifestyle.  I also knew if I went flat and delayed 2-3 years that I would never go through with it.  I can't give you my own experience post op yet, as my surgery is scheduled for next Tuesday. I'm happy to help in anyway though. Best wishes making your decision Mickey x ️

  • Very interesting & helpful, thanks. Best wishes for your surgery!

  • Thank you. How long do you have to decide? There's a good chart in the breast cancer now booklet (and separately) that gives brief details of what's involved with all reconstruction options and timescales etc. all the best making your decision. Just send a message if you have any questions or anything. All the best Mickey x ️

  • Hi,

also mid 50's and very active. 3cm lump on a 32A bra, so I went for lumpectomy and I'm really pleased with the restult. I didn't go for full mastectomy as it felt too final for me. The surgery was fine, I'm almost back to full range of movement 5 weeks later and I've started back to lifting weights. Unfortunately they found cancer in lymph nodes so I've now got to have auxiliary clearance.

it's a hard decision, take as much advice as you need.

    good luck xx

  • Thanks for replying. Unfortunately I don’t have the lumpectomy option now or I certainly would have gone for that. Best wishes for your ongoing treatment.

  • As long as it takes to get an appointment with the plastic surgeon, 2 weeks? I have that information, thanks! Best wishes x

  • I hope you get the Plastic Surgeon appointment soon then. I found it very hard at first when they first mentioned masectomy, but I did feel better by looking at all the reconstruction options myself and discussing them so that I knew what I felt was the best possible option for me before I saw the Plastic Surgeon. I guess that gave me an element  of control back. Wishing you all the best, but here if you want to discuss further any time. Virtual hugs Mickey xx ️

  • Hi again, sorry - another tip - if you think you want to delay reconstruction for any reason or the plastic surgeon suggests it to buy you time, just ask what the timescale is.  I felt a bit pressured to consider delaying reconstruction but when I asked what the timescale was for delayed reconstruction surgery and I was told 2-3 years, I knew that for me if I waited 2-3 years that I would never have gone back for the reconstruction, but that's obviously how I felt. Xx ️
