Cancer returns after double mastectomy

Hi lovely ladies,

Its 2.30am and what a surprise I can't switch off to sleep! 4 weeks ago I found a lump in my reconstructed breast last week I had it confirmed the cancer had returned it's very near the same location as the first and just under the skin (as this would of been where any breast tissue would of been left behind) today I had a pet scan and I'm absolutely petrified what if this is not a local recurrence. The what ifs are driving me mad! I'm a mum to 5 beautiful children we have brought forward our wedding to January now too!
I would love to hear from anyone who has been in this situation

  • Hello lauzlj84,

Poor you being wide awake at 02.25am unable to sleep. This is something many of our members will relate to. You are welcome to come on the forum at any time even in the early hours of the morning as Cancer Chat never sleeps. I am so sorry to hear that you have been told that the cancer has returned.

I hope that you will hear more soon about the results of your PET scan. The wait and all the what ifs must be so hard and this must be having an impact on your sleep at the moment. I know it's super hard but try and keep busy while you are waiting to find out all the details - I can imagine this won't be too difficult with five little ones but it is normal that this will be playing on your mind until you get the results and know exactly what you are dealing with. Avoid looking anything up on google at this stage or it will make you worry even more.

Congratulations on your wedding in January it will be a beautiful occasion. We will be thinking of you in the coming days and we keep everything crossed that it is all just a local recurrence that can be easily contained and dealt with.

Should you wish to have a chat with one of our cancer nurses, feel free to give them a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

Hopefully you will hear from some of our ladies who have been in a similar situation and they will be along shortly to share their story with you. Keep us updated if you get a chance when you hear some more news.

    Best wishes,

    Lucie, Cancer Chat Moderator
