Diagnosed with blood cancer and unsure what to do

Hi, everyone, been diagnosed with blood cancer three weeks ago, just awaiting type of cancer...Not been feeling too great and unsure what to do, my gp says only specialist will deal with me now. . How can i be sure its cancer thats making me feel unwell or something else ? Its all very confusing.

  • Hiya.  I have zero experience with blood cancers, but just wanted to say, only the specialists will be able to tell you what is and what isn't related.

That said (but the caveat is, it's a completely different cancer), my wife was ill for 2 months prior to her breast cancer diagnosis. She had been under a ton of stress (losing her mum, sorting out a care home for her dad, and work was insanely busy and demanding). She actually didn't look well either.

Anyway, we both assumed she was feeling rubbish due to the tumour.  Turns out she wasn't.  It was 100% the stress.  Her oncologist stated a breast tumour wouldn't be giving her all those symptoms when the scans were all clear. Once she got her diagnosis, and shed all those stresses, the change was almost instant. She looked well again.

Stress, worry and anxiety, which you will have in abundance purely due to your diagnosis alone, can and does place a lot of burden upon your body. So even if it turns out your blood condition is causing some of it, some will probably be down to your stress too.

  • Hi, thanks for replying, I hope your wife is well, and recovering. .thats very interesting as i too, cared for my mum, due to cancer, sadly we only had 10 weeks with her and also care for my gran who has dementia and work full time.  Probably as you said could be the stress too, of everything. I just wish that a doctor would actually speak to me so i knew whether it was all stress or due to cancer. Hopefully find out in a week's time full diagnosis and get to speak to my specialist face to face. . Thank you

  • The best advice anyone can give you at this point is, jot down any questions you have between now and then. Leave enough space between those questions to jot down those answers.  I can almost guarantee you, you won't remember much or will completely forget to ask most of those questions.  You think you're taking it all in, but you won't.  Not many people do.  Even take someone with you if you can.

We've come out of appointments and my wife has claimed she heard everything as she was walking out.  During discussions afterwards, it became clear she took in very little. So yeah, jot anything down, and write the answers down as and when you get them.

  • Hi, thanks for the great advice, i never take anything in nowadays lol never thought of writing things down either, not quite sure what id want to ask ...... Will pick up a notebook today though and write as much things down as i can when i think of them, im imagining my appointment going to be  bit of blur, im hoping my h2b can come in with me, unsure though due to covid. Thanks again
