Daddy Copd and right lung tumor

Hi

I was looking for some advice. My Dad has had copd for several years. He was put on oxygen 2 years ago but continued to live a healthy, active life. Last weekend he got very poorly and I ended up bringing him to hospital.  He was admitted and they did lots of tests. They think he had a silent heart attack and his lung disease has progressed. However, yesterday the doctor came and explained tgat the ct scan also showed an abnormality that they think is a tumor.  They can't confirm it she said because Dad wouldn't be able to do the camera test. She told me they are 80% it is cancer but that Dad wouldn't be suitable fir radiotherapy or chemotherapy because of his health.  So basically we have no certainty- we've been told Dad likely has cancer and if it is we just wait fir things to get worse as they can't treat. The tumor is at bottom of right lung and said sone spread to glands nearby but still just in one place. Has anyone else had experience of this? My dad is 78 and very independent. Is it worth getting a second opinion? Thanks for any information

  • Hello Glittershine

I'm sorry to hear about your Dad's ongoing health problems and that now there is a strong possibility that he also has lung cancer. It's understandably a difficult time for you all and not having a definitive answer from the Dr's has probably made this even more difficult.

We have some information on our website about getting a second opinion but in the meantime, you could give our nurses a call to talk things through with them. I'm sure they will be able to offer some information and support that may help you both decide if this is something your Dad wants to pursue. If you'd like to speak with them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

I do hope that your Dad is able to get some answers about the next steps in managing things and that the medical team is able to make him comfortable.

    Best wishes,
