Diagnosed with bladder cancer. Anyone had BSG or removal?

Ok, I was diagnosed with bladder cancer a couple of weeks ago following 1 case of blood in my urine. Had tumours removed 2 weeks ago and went back to my consultant today for the results. Consultant confirmed all tumours removed and no muscle penetration noted. Tumours were T1. My options were given now as full bladder removal ( 90% chance of no return but I'm 52 so big impact on life quality?) BSG over a period. I have to return for a further operation in 2 weeks to check if the cancer has returned. I thought this sounded positive but the consultant made it sound negative. Anyone has any experience of this situation? Thoughts on BSG or removal? Thanks in advance, as I'm guessing with most, I'm scared

  • Hi Bingo4

I haven’t had primary bladder cancer, but I had cancer spread over my bladder, and as part of a much larger surgery had my bladder removed 20 months ago. I was 57 when I had my surgery, and I also have a colostomy. Yes, it’s life changing, but I just wanted to say that you can have a really good quality of life after bladder removal. I find it easy now to manage, but it’s certainly a challenge at the start!

I would also say that I have never regretted my surgery for a moment. I would not be here without it, and living with 2 stomas was for me a small price to pay for my survival. I had a lot lower chance of success than you’ve been advised-more like 50%, but I have been well ever since and have never had to return to hospital for any further treatment. I got used to my new plumbing pretty quickly and it’s second nature now for me. It’s a big decision for you, I appreciate that, but don’t imagine that you can’t have a good quality of life afterwards. I’m packing my case today for a holiday abroad leaving tomorrow!

  • Hi, thanks for replying. It's all been such a whirlwind. I'm not happy really with my consultant, he is never positive and I came out of yesterday's meeting feeling really low when I think all he gave me was good news!!! ( or as good as I could have hoped for ) I have gone back to being scared when I know in my mind the outcome of the initial operation was brilliant. Like everyone I guess you never think it's going to happen to you and I look at my young family and pray for the future. I'm glad its going well for you, there needs to be more good news stories to stop people worrying as much as you do. A holiday must be well earned and I hope that you stay fit and healthy moving forward. Thanks again for getting in touch
