Starting breast cancer chemo next week

Iv read quite a few posts now and don't feel quite as scared about starting chemo as I did. Am I right in thinking you lovely people were still up an about each days but to expect the worse on my second week after chemo, an when I say worse does it mean in bed all day for a week ?

    Hi keely197

No it doesn't mean you will be in bed ,it's not great but no where near as bad as you've been imagining. But everyone who undergoes chemotherapy, will have a drug that is tailored just for them, not everyone  gets l the side effects that are listed.  Everyone's body and how they respond to thier chemotherapy drugs  will be different ,some one having the same drug as you have, will not always respond with the same side effects, what you may or may not get will be totaly different. That is the one piece of advice I was given by my chemotherapy nurse who was looking  after me gave me I was told never expect  to have any side effects, yes you may experience some, but never expect too, always stay positive, and never compare yourself to anyone who tells you what side effects they do or don't have  or get,  I do think you will be fine . Hopefully it won't be half as bad as you fear  big hugs  sent your way.  Do let us know how everything goes .

  • Hi jassoscared,

Thankyou so much for your reply this is so positive, to be honest a lot of people on here are very positive. I find its more people I speak to personally aren't always as positive. This makes me feel a lot better. I will be sure to continue feeling strong an ready to battle what's ahead of me x

  • Hi Keeley,

Yes don t be scared as it is very manageable. Keep a positive attitude , keep moving and exercising, eat well and take the nausea medication when needed and you will be fine. I found eating little and often helped and also swilled my mouth out twice a day with coconut oil stopped me getting mouth sores. I got more tired towards the end as it is accumulative but could still function normally. You ve got this , sending love and best wishes xx

  • Hi Debbie, thankyou so much. Which coconut oil was it? I'm thinking it normally comes solid?  This is really positive, did you stay away from many people etc iv got kids an a big family it would be nice to maybe see them an take kids out some times. I understand iv got to be careful of infection but we've still got to live our life's right!? Xx

  • Yes it was just the cheap one from lidl. Scoop out a teaspoon and then swill it round for about 5 mins, tastes good. I still saw my friends and even went into school a few times as I m a teacher. Also have young school age children so impossible to keep away from everyone. Just be cautious , loads of hand gel constantly and masks. I also used the cold cap, not sure if you are considering this , which was worth it as kept 70% of my hair and made me feel so much better about myself to face the world without looking ill . Hope this helps

  • Great il get some of that coconut oil. Yes I have children in primary and secondary so it's important to me that I still keep some sort of normality for them in every day life. I'm undecided on the cold cap, was it quite painfull?  I'm a hairdresser so the thought of loosing my hair is massive to me. Did yours thin in areas or did you end up with missing patches? Did it extend the timing of your treatment greatly? Thanks debbie

  • Hiya. I was on 3 cycles of fec and then 3 of docetaxol.  With the fec I had to keep it on for an hour before and 90 mins after. With the dicetaxol it does nt need to be on so long , 30 mins after. Not painful , the first 15 mins are the worst, after that it goes numb. I took some paracetamol before it went on , used a nice warm scarf on my neck and had a hot drink to help the first bit. It's definitely doable.  No patches or bald spots , just thinner but only I can notice that . No one else has. I would recommend it totally , yes it extends the time but what else would you be doing ?? Go for it , u won t regret it x
