Laryngectomy/Now Osophagus Diagnosis

Hi All

I'm new on this site my main one upto now has been MacMillan Support, last year August 2020 I had a complete Laryngectomy-removal of voicebox- I have been making such excellent recovery from that and still working @ 71 ! and then 3 weeks ago my last scan discovered a suspicious thing in my food pipe, after the camera job I knew it was Cancer as he took a biopsy, I have met the Clinical Nurse and she has expleained as much as she can before the Pet Scan, which wa suppose to be today but was cancelled this morning as the scanner had broken down so re booked for Saturday.

I am seeing my Head and Neck Consultant tomorrow so I think as she was the architect of all the follow-on then she would have the scan results but that won't happen now

My question is if the cancer is in early stage and not latched onto anything else is it always Surgery ? only what I have read frightens me more than my Laryngectomy op. The good thing that the Nurse said was that I am having no trouble eating at the moment, some things are a no no such as bread as it is too soft to swallow

Any thoughts would be grateful

    Hi Tony.

    Sorry to read your having a tough time lately.

    I suppose it all depends on scan results , biopsy results etc etc to your treatment plan plus how well you are in regards to surgery. 
    The ultimate decision however lays with you. You won't be forced to decide but guided to what's the specialists think best. 

    They usually collate all the results of your tests and discuss best treatment plan in and MDT meeting.

    Write down any question you can think about as often you forget to ask. Take Someone with you to your results too as often you don't catch all information overload.

    Keep eating to keep your strength up.

    We met with the Oncologist today and whilst the final decision will be Tuesday Morning they have decided on no Surgery and 5 weeks x 5 days Chemo/RT, he says as it is so high up the Surgery would be a very last resort, what they have seen with the pick up scan it has not spread to anywhere else but the Chemo will also pick up any strays, they are also organising a PEG for safety, in case I have problems later on
