Feeling lost! Mum diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer

My mum has just been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. Large tumour (5cms ) in lower right lung plus an enlarged lump node. Awaiting brain CT . I live in the uk, she lives in Ireland. I've got no idea how I'm meant to respond to this as right now I am scared of what is ahead. Any suggestions to get me focused please?

    Hi Caroline,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am so sorry to hear about your mum's diagnosis.  I was in exactly the same position as you with my mum, 24 years ago. Mum had secondary cancer in her lungs, liver, bones and brain and it was heartbreaking to see her go through so much. We sadly lost her eventually. All I could do was to travel across to see her as often as I could and to ensure that she knew how loved she was. I tried to provide all that she needed and ensured that her pain was properly controlled.

Try not to think of the future just now. Instead, take things day by day, or even hour by hour if neccessary. See if there is anyone that she would like to see or anywhere that she might like to visit. Make memories with her while you can.

Does she have support at home? This is the one thing that she will need as she travels this journey. Please keep in touch and let us know how her brain scan goes. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Good morning Jolamine,

thank you so much for your reply. Yes she does have support at home and there is going to be a full care package put in place. I think you are right in say to take each day as it comes. My head is all over the place at present but I need to focus on the present rather than the future.

    Hi Caroline,

I am glad to hear that a care package is being put in place and that your mum has support at home. You will certainly find it better for all the family to concentrate on the present. It is only natural to find your emotions all over the place - angry one minute, crying the next.

I hope that she gets her brain scan soon and that no secondaries are found there.

Please remember that we are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
