Melanoma

Hi

I had a small mole removed off my back 6weeks ago ,unfortunately today I received the news it ia a Melenoma.

My doctor told me it's a superficial spreading Melenoma and it's 0.6mm deep I am been referred for a WLE .

Has anyone any advice or what I should expect.

Thanks x

  • Hello Aoifep

I'm sorry to hear that your results showed that the mole recently removed was a melanoma. It's understandable that you may be feeling upset or worried about this news and what the next steps may be.

I can see that you've posted on a few other threads on the forum about your diagnosis and hopefully some of our members who have personal experience with melanoma will post to share their advice with you.

In the meantime, we do have some information on our website about melanoma that you may find useful. We also have a team of nurses here at CRUK that you can call to talk with. I'm sure that they will be happy to give any information, advice, and support that they can. If you'd like to chat with them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

    I hope this helps.

    Best wishes,

  • I was recently diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma and had a WLE and lymph node biopsy.

The WLE is a simple procedure; my children think I have a scar that looks like a tennis racquet in my back

I did have problems with the wound healing; particularly at the tightest point of the scar where it opened up on a couple of occasions through sneezing. However the skin on my back, where the mile was first removed, was already tight.

4/5 months later my scar has healed really well and I can say that I am "proud" of it. I mean it's big but it's my way of showing people what I've survived, not that many people know.

I would highly recommend the WLE procedure, if your having doubts, as it's one of the best ways of reducing your risk of further spread of the cancer and it leaves you with a cool scar

  • Thanks for replying I am glad to hear you are doing good after your diagnosis,  did your WLE return all clear ?

Oh I will defo have it they can take as much skin as they like so I can put all this behind me , it's an awful scare to get and I think melenoma is something moat ppl don't know about x

  • Yes, since the WLE I've had no signs of cancer; that's also after 3 PET and MRI scans as safety nets.

I agree, at the time of the WLE it was all about getting that done, take as much as you want:laugh: You're right I don't think many people know about melanoma, I think most people assume it's something for other countries than the U.K.

Have they doctors rated your cancer?

  • Oh I am thrilled to hear you most be so relieved that you can move on with your life now that youv been given the all clear

My dermatologist told me I was stage 1 as the depth was only 0.6mm so the WLE was a precaution I was crying when she was telling me but she was like its good news out of bad take It , I didn't see it like that at the time x

  • It certainly is good news out of bad of you.

I am very thankful that I've been clear up to this point however I know it's a long road to being given the official oncologist all clear. I'm being monitored for the next 10 years so baby steps and thanks giving throughout.

I remember being told I had the cancer but have very poor recollection of when I was told the cancer was stage 3 and not stage 2 (as per the original diagnosis). My cancer was only confirmed as stage 3 after a sentinel lymph node biopsy. It very strange how the brain works.
