Cervical cancer diagnosis

Hi everyone,

New to the group as I just found out my mum has cervical cancer, she is only 51

She has been diagnosed with stage 2, however they are not sure if it has spread or not...we are currently waiting on an appointment for a pet scan to confirm this.

I am confused as to how they have diagnosed her with stage 2 cancer without knowing if it has spread?

Can anyone shed any light please?

Thankyou all

  • Hi, sorry to find you here asking for advice.

I have breast cancer so can't give you exact details of cervical but think song similar lines.

My cancer was grade 2 following biopsy. Grade 1cancer slow growth. Grade 2 intermediate growth abs Grade 3 rapidly growing cancer cells. I imagine she's had some tests done to confirm cancer I'm thinking they've taken sample.

but sometimes it's measured from size. My cancer was over 2cm which is classed as stage 2 I think.
Your mum will probably need further tests to see if it's just confined to specific area. All depends on spread to treatment plan.
I found it easier writing down questions- see if you can attend appoitments with her as it's information overload and handy having another set of ears to hear what's going on.
    keep us posted

  • Hi,

I was first diagnosed with stage 2A in the hospital but still had to undergo more scans to see if it had spread. I think the staging (and I could be wrong, I'm not a doctor) indicates where the main cancer site is (mine was the cervix and the top part of my vagina). Hope this helps and I agree with [@Efffie]‍ , write down your questions and don't be afraid to ask them! I kept a notebook during my treatment so I could write thoughts/questions down as they came to me. Tell your mum she can do this! Take it one day, 1 appointment, 1 treatment at a time. Expect setbacks but don't let them defeat you. It is just part of the process, I think.

  • Hi Jcb93

I’m sorry to hear about your mum’s diagnosis. I’m not sure how the cancer has been staged without all the scan results etc, as they will be needed for final confirmation.

It’s important to note that grade and stage are NOT the same thing. Grade refers to the degree of abnormality of cells on a scale of 1 to 3, with 1 being least abnormal and 3 being most abnormal. The stage of cancer will depend on tumour size and location, and will determine what treatment is required.

Stages of cancer are 1 to 4, and with cervical cancer stage 2 would be treated with chemo and radiation rather than surgery. If the cancer has spread, the staging would change-for example if there is lymph node involvement the stage would automatically be stage 3 for cervical cancer although the treatment should still be chemo and radiation.

I was originally diagnosed with stage 2b cervical cancer, and have been through treatment, so if I can help with anything from my own personal experi3nce, please do ask. x

  • Thankyou so much for your reply, it has brought some comfort!

Would the grade be given first and then the confirmation of stage after the pet scan?

My mum seems to be in denial and I'm worried that she isn't taking in the information.

    Thankyou so much again

  • It’s all a lot to take in when you are first diagnosed, and once you hear the word cancer, it does seem to affect how much information you can absorb after that, in my experience, so it may not be that your mum is in denial-simply that she hasn’t taken everything in. Actually, I was never given a grade in my diagnosis-and the most important thing with this cancer is the stage.

Within the stagings for cervical cancer, there are further sub divisions depending on spread and location and these are internationally followed stagings which apply to everyone depending on their individual situation. Until the scans are done, it can be a bit of guesswork, or best estimate by the gynaecologist. For example, I was initially told my treatment would be a radical hysterectomy but when my scan results were in, this was not an option because my cancer had spread a little outside the cervix making it 2b and meaning surgery was not an option. The letters after the number indicate the level of spread, and for me at 2b this was described as locally advanced. So, it hadn’t spread very far, and was contained close to the cervix.

The petscan will determine any spread and will be required for a definitive staging. I wouldn’t get hung up on grade. As I say, I’ve never known my grade and it wasn’t relevant to my treatment. Other cancers might be different, so it’s best to focus on the information specifically for cervical cancer to avoid any possible confusion. x
