Dad has cancer for the 3rd time

My Dad had a rare form of neck cancer which was aggressive, but with an operation and radiotherapy he was told it had gone and they were really pleased!  This was 6 months ago. He was diagnosed with small bowel cancer 6 weeks ago and they operated 2 weeks ago. He has recovered well and has a meeting today to discuss chemo as the lymph nodes affected were too near the blood vessels to remove them. We have now found out (today) after a scan on prostrate that he's now potentially got prostate cancer. I'm absolutely beside myself. He's 57, fit and healthy, but surely this is about as much as his body can take. I'm petrified of losing him.

does anybody have any kind of reassurance, knowledge, experience of this?

many thanks!

  • Hello Maddie1,

Your poor dad, that's a lot of different cancers in a row! I hope that the neck cancer is gone for good and that he is recovering well after his bowel cancer surgery. It must have been a real shock to then find out that he has potentially got prostate cancer. I hope that you can get some certainty on this though and a definite diagnosis. If it is confirmed that he has prostate cancer, it could be that it is in its early stages and that it is very treatable as there are a lot of good treatment options available for prostate cancer. You will only know for sure what you are dealing with once you have a full and detailed diagnosis but I thought you may want to read more about this in our section on prostate cancer.

I hope that you will hear from other members who have dealt with this kind of situation before and that they will be along shortly to share their experience with you. If at any point you have any questions about any of your dad's cancers or would like to talk things through, feel free to give our cancer nurses a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

    Best wishes,

  • So sorry to hear this, I have had the same cancer twice and I thought I was unlucky!

Sounds like he's a real fighter and has done well recovering from the 2 already.

Doesn't do a thing for anxiety though does it.

He has two things in his favour... age & fitness.

My Dad was diagnosed in his 80's with prostate cancer. His psa was really high and there was a small spread to his pelvis. He was put on 3 monthly injection and his psa is really low now and he is doing really well. infact he has been told this will not kill him even at his age.

I wish your Dad a speedy recovery, I'm sure he will fight this just like he has before. xx
