Diagnosed on Friday, so unwell already!

My mum has been unwell with her tummy for a few years now but we all put it down to her alcoholism. Which we now all feel terrible guilty about.

Last few weeks she has been really unwell. Can't walk very well, passing out all the time, falling over and in so much pain with her tummy.

dad took her to local GP on Friday and the doctor said there and then that she had stomach cancer. Which obviously must be advanced as he said it without doing any tests ... and as mum has been unwell for a few years ... it makes sense.

She seems to be going down hill rapidly.

She sleeps all the time, can hardly walk, in so much pain. Her eyes and skin are yellow, so I think her liver is probably ****** too.

I've been researching stomach cancer all weekend and from what I read and what I see in my mum ... I don't think she has long left.

but, we know nothing about her cancer yet as she's had no tests, not seen any professionals etc.

Do ppl get this sick with cancer before treatment makes them feel a bit better or am I right in feeling like this is it?

If anyone could share their experience with me, good or bad, I'd appreciate it. I don't need people to sugar coat stuff as I just need to hear some honesty.

xx

  • Hi, Sorry to find you in here asking for advice. It's a great place to get info and has helped me find some answers.

Ive had different but similar scenario with my mam- she's been treated for Parkinson's for a few years , and had lots of back pain and rib pin. Was told she needed to strengthen muscles so was sent to physio -anyways she was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer which had spread to ribs. And no one knew-she told several doctors she was in agony every day. My mam lasted 7 Weeks after her diagnosis.

Symptoms can be masked by others -and alcohol consumption often is a contributing factor to lots of things

yellow skin can be a sign of a few things-liver / pancreas. Yellow skin is not always cancer tho-have they done tests and defo know it is?
Is she well Enough for Surgery/ treatment?
my mum wasn't given any treatment due to her already frialty.
the doctors should discuss test results with your mam , and ask if you and your dad can be present.

Tests.results , treatment plan, they often have an idea of life expentancty ( not always accurate as they have my dad 2years and he lived for 8)

My uncle was alcohol dependant -ate very little and had lost over 12stone. Huge deterioration seen in him over a 2year period. He didn't like visitors so I only saw him twice a year. But spoke every week on the phone.
Weak couldn't stand etc. He was a tough cookie and lived 6months after a fall and broke marm( bone cancer. Liver ling etc )

All you can do is be there For your mam and to suport

    Your dad too .

    keep us posted.

    Much love Efffie x

  • Sorry to about what your family has gone through too.

mum had a blood test on Monday, that's all so far and won't have those results for a while.

im worried that she's had cancer for years and masked it with alcohol. The last 2 years, since we first went in lock down, mum has been drinking an insane amount of alcohol every day.

this is why we all through her symptoms where alcohol related but now I think she was trying to mask them by drinking.

she's been unwell for about 3 years now, but the last month or so, she's just got worse and worse ... but this last week ... she's very poorly. Just sleeping all the time, in pain, not eating much, her stomach is huge and she says she can feel a huge lump in there.

I'm trying to stay positive but also realistic. With how unwell she is now, I just don't see how she'd be strong enough for treatment ... and what I've read about advanced cancer symptoms ... I don't think she'll be offered any.

how long do people usually have to wait till there are told more information?

  • Hi again. If they think it is ascites (looks like big pregnant tummy) and the doctors suspecting cancer then your mam should find things out within two weeks.
she had bloods taken ?? As they are often a good marker of things too.
Can you speak to your GP and ask for  home visit and see if they can put a care package in place.
Locally we have a SPA -a helpline where you can get family asessed by nurse and a some help getting her dressed . Washed if she's too poorly to do it unaided.

  • She's able to get dressed and stuff herself, she even went grocery shopping by herself yesterday ... but it did wipe her out abs made her feel awful.

I've told her I'll do her shopping from now on, just do she can rest.

She had bloods taken on Monday but no idea when the results will be in.

  • Hi, tests can take 2 weeks. Chase her results up after a week saying you are concerned.
    Ask for cancellations.

write down questions and ask your mum what she's thinking. Chat over things if she's wanting too.
