Tonsil cancer - radiation/chemo what to expect?

Hi everyone,

My granda (74) has just been diagnosed with tonsil cancer with 1 lymph node involvement. He's yet to meet the oncologist and get an official plan drawn up, however, the consultant in head and neck cancer did say that the main treatment here is radiation - 7 weeks of daily radiotherapy.

due to my grandas slight kidney dysfunction and previous heart attacks chemo may be not worth the risk as he believes radiation alone will 'melt' the mass away quite quickly (as it is hpv positive type).

my question is what can he expect from radiation? It is localised to the right tonsil and right lymph node.

is there any advice i can pass on to him?

I am a nurse newly working in an oncology/haematology ward, and have some idea but I would love to hear others personal experience.

doctors have said it is early stages and is positive it will be gone with 7 weeks of treatment, though the mass is quite big as is his right tonsil and he does find it uncomfortable eating chewy or bulky food.

thanks

  • Hi kfrances,

It is good to hear that the doctors seem positive and that there are some next steps in place. We have some information about radiotherapy on our website so it might be worth looking through that if you'd like to find out a bit more. The doctor/specialist involved in his care will also be able to advise about what to expect or any preparation required.

Meanwhile, hopefully you will receive further replies soon from others on the forum.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
