Too long to wait for biopsy?

After months of back pain and stomach problems, and various tests, my mum has been told she has pancreatic cancer based on CT scan and blood tests. The next step is an endoscopic ultrasound biopsy but has a three week wait before an appointment. Is that a normal timeframe? We were under the impression this woukd happen much much quicker? Are other hospitals likely to have appointments sooner?

  • Hello RockRunner

I'm sorry to hear about your Mum's diagnosis. It's understandable that you're feeling worried about her and the wait for her biopsy.

We know that people often can wait a few weeks in between appointments. Unfortunately, Covid has also had an impact on waiting times and some people are waiting longer than before the pandemic. It may be worth speaking with the Consultant's secretary to see if there is any chance of your Mum having a cancellation appointment if one becomes available.

If you'd like to talk through your concerns with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm for some advice and support.

I do hope that you have some news soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you. We are based in the Channel Islands so there's a lot of logistics to organise which I assume would put us out of the running for a lot of cancellation appointment but we will definitely ask the question. Thanks for taking the time to respond, much appreciated :)
