Mri scan - can I go private to speed up process?

My husband was diagnosed with kidney cancer a few weeks ago. He's now been told he has to have an mri scan ( as something has shown up in his bones.) So he can't see his specialist until he has this, but my understanding is he could be waiting weeks for a scan because of the backlog.

My question is can I pay privately for a scan to speed the process up, but stay with the nhs for any treatment?

He's so anxious and stressed, I'd like to get his results quickly if I can.

TIA

    Hi Sanjo,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear about your husband's diagnosis. You may find that you are waiting longer for a private MRI because of the current backlog too. The best thing to do, would be to ask your husband's consultant if they would accept the findings of a private MRI. Also, it would be worth contacting the private hospital to enquire about cost and availability before you decide upon the best way forward.

I do hope that you get this sorted and hear more soon.

Please keep in touch. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • I would check that a private mri would be acceptable for your consultant to proceed with your treatment,  l would ask his secretary. I can understand your anxiety you can contact the nurse specialist they are part of the multidisciplinary team and can advise you, they are aware of the present situation and what's next.

I hope you have the information you need soon
