Throat cancer with node involvement - P16 positive - scared?

Hi everyone,

My granda has just been diagnosed with metastatic squamous cell carcinoma positive for P16. Was discovered after the L1 node was very enlarged and biopsied, the tonsil on the samE side is 'unusual looking' and larger than the other so that was too biopsied which I'm sure this week we may be told it is the primary.

however, I am just looking for those who have been on a similar journey and their experience to shed some light on what to expect or feel as my granda is quite overwhelmed not tech savvy and is eager to speak to others who have been diagnosed with something similar.

I know that once it is in the lymph node the chance of it spreading elsewhere is greater, is this always the case once it's in the lymph nodes or is there some hope it's contained to upper neck region?

I am just grasping for hope really, hope that he will be okay, that he will fight this, as a nurse newly employed in oncology I am aware to an extent but it is all new to me in my profession as it is at home.

  • Hi kfrances,

I'm sorry to hear of the situation with your granda - I can appreciate there must be a lot of questions and it's good that you're looking to find out more. Your question however would really be best answered by his doctor/specialist as they will be best placed to advise specifically to him. Hopefully you will have an opportunity soon to ask these questions, as well as to get the answers you need about what's going on.

If you haven't already, do have a search of the forum (using the button in the blue bar above) in case there are other potentially relevant discussions that could be helpful.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
