Throat cancer diagnosis - what next?

Hi there,

My granda (74) had biopsies of (R) tonsil and a mass on the (R) side of the neck (lymph node - N1). It has come back as squamous cell carcinoma - positive for P16. The lymph node is secondary and awaiting on results from biopsy. However, his ENT consultant told him he would remove the tonsil rather than carrying out a biopsy but instead left the tonsil and took the biopsy (without any rational given), after the surgery he was told it was cancer and he would be referred to head and neck specialist who would discuss his case in an MDT meeting. He's awaiting results for CT scan too.

My question is what to expect next? He received an appointment for next week to meet with the head and neck specialist, which I presumed would be to confirm diagnosis and prognosis, however, he got another appointment to also meet with the ENT surgeon/consultant the day before. Is it normal to receive two such appointments one after the other, I'm sure one appointment would have been sufficient enough to discuss my grandas diagnosis and plan.

Any advice in general about throat cancer and it's treatment would be much appreciated, even advice to give my granda as he is so nervous and down about his diagnosis and what to expect.

Thanks

  • Hi Kfrances,

I can't offer much advice on throat cancer. But got some knowledge about other types-
Your Granda will end up with lots of appointments for different tests. Case will be discussed in a MDT. More tests. More MDT etc.

My case-I had tests and biopsy. Told cancer straight away but needed to grade it. Told surgery options. Biopsy Results took two weeks. Discussed in MDT. Results Discussed again with me. Put forward for surgery-pre assessment tests. Had Two other procedures of radiation to locate lump easier. 5weeks wait for Surgery. 2week wait for lump results. Case results disscussed In another MDT. Results day with me-options. My cancer is now sent to USA to be tested. 2more weeks wait. Then referred to oncologist to either arrange Chemo or different oncologist for Radiotherapy.
Your Granda should be allocated a cancer nurse. They are approachable for advice.  This chat forum is good too. Gain advice from others going though the same or similar.
Chat over things with your Granda.

    best of luck
