Benefits of Tamoxifen. Very confused. Help appreciated.

Hi to everyone. Currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Lumpectomy and removal of some lymph nodes so far. Now awaiting radiotherapy.

The consultant has already written a prescription for TAM which I'm supposed to be taking straight away. Mmm. If I do start taking this evil drug it will definitely be AFTER radiotherapy.

So do I start taking it then or not? Decided to do a bit of internet searching to determine any benefits (I'm already well aware of the unacceptable possible side effects). And here the confusion starts. So the first claim that keeps popping up in various articles is that TAM reduces the risk of recurrence by 40-50%. Okay, got that. So then I go to the predict NHS tool. Apparently 5years after surgery my overall survival rate is 88%. With hormone therapy, which is  presumably taken to prevent recurrence, it's only 89%, an additional benefit of only 1% (oh dear).

Believe it or not I have a science background but despite this I'm unable to unravel the mystery of of this conundrum. Can anyone help me out please? Am I being stupid? Only kind answers please. I'm not feeling at my best right at this moment!

  • Hi Lesl49,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. It's always a good idea to understand the reasons behind these things, so your thoughts and questions are of course sensible and understandable. It sounds like the best thing would be to talk this through with your doctor/specialist and see how they respond, and take it from there.

Our nurses are also available if you'd like to speak to one of them about it. You can reach them on 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

Meanwhile, if anyone here has similar experience or thoughts to share then hopefully they'll be along soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
