The Wait

Ive had a galaxy chocolate coloured mole on my calf  all my life, grew up in africa, In May I  noticed  a dark  bitter chocolate coloured mole growing on top  perfectly round, itchy, I also have lymphadema  in ankles and after a very hot day noticed  this mole sweating along with general swelling .I   went to doctors  about the swelling in ankles, same day  he did fast track referal .  Went to hospital, they took photos , then about 10 days later I got an appointment in the outspatients. This was   4 weeks ago and  I had a 1 cm mole removed.

letter arrived in post  for apt yesterday . I saw a couple of doctors and the macmillan nurses, I have nodular melanoma.  They have referred me for sentinel lymph node biopsy and for wide local incision.

The trouble is I have to wait another 14 weeks , they said this is due to covid 19 ... is this wait normal.? obviously I am petrified that  I have cancer cells swilling about throughout my lymphatic system

  • Hi there, so sorry to hear your diagnosis. This is clearly very worrying for you. I don't know what part of the country your in but I'm essex. Here's my story :

May 21st went to gp, mole on inner left knee grown to 5p size raised itchy discoloured and shape changed all within a couple of months

    May 28th seen in dermatology

June 20th mole removed under local anaesthetic

July 5th results it's melanoma plan to have further wide local excision and groin lymph node biopsy

Aug 4th operation wle and node biopsy

Sept 6th results already present in my lymph nodes

    Plan to have immunology.

Sept 13th PET-CT scan. Braf test being performed on biopsied tissue

Oct 4th oncolgy appt discuss results, treatment etc

I think 14wks is a very long time to wait especially with a confirmed cancer diagnosis.  I'd advice you to phone macmillian cns nurse and ask her why such a long wait?, I know my macmillan keyworker nurse was able to chase appointments and results for me.

All the best and please keep us posted how you are doing.

  • Hi,

I'm sorry you have had this diagnosis and are waiting such a long time for the WLE and SLNB. 14 weeks is the longest I've heard of (I've heard of some waiting 10 weeks). Are you in Northern Ireland by any chance as they are experiencing very long waits due to many reasons? I would suggest that you contact your specialist nurse and say you are happy to take a last minute cancellation of one comes up, rather than wait so long.

It's normal to worry that a delay may cause a spread but it rarely does. Focus on the fact that the melanoma has been removed now, that the WLE is a 'belt and braces' procedure and that the SLNB is a staging procedure and not a treatment.

I will send you a friend request - if you accept it I can send you some further information by private message.

  • Hi , I was diagnosed in august and was told my wait would be about 14 weeks this was because the margins were clear, otherwise they would have done the SNLB and WLE earlier.
