Kidney Tumour (3cm) - Can't Decide!

Hi everyone.

I'm a healthy 50yo man and 2 days before 50th was told after ultrasound which I had for some abdomen pain there was a solid 2.8cm mass, which confirmed by CT scan as a tumour in right kidney.

My consultant said I could watch it and get a scan every 6 months to monitor it or go for keyhole partial removal. Either that or a biopsy but he would have to confirm if biopsy could be done easily.

He said choice was mine but if him he would probably watch and monitor, however I am a worrier by nature and think it could be difficult to just do this. Thing is I'm not so worried about the kidney but worried about it spreading (have lungs CT next week). The choice is so difficult, as I am very sporty and worried if I have the partial op I could have problems cycling, gym etc. after I recover.

Anyone else had a tumour in similar size and considered the monitoring approach  or do most just go for the partial op?

Any help gratefully accepted!

Regards,

Rob

  • Hi 1[@Rob1971]‍

Sorry to hear you have a difficult decision to make and although I have not been through the same situation as you, like most of us on here we have had to make decisions about treatment.

The best answer I can give you is, what feels best for you?, as a worrier are you going to be able to play the waiting game of every 6 months waiting for that appointment and scan to hear what is happening, what happens if an appointment has to be delayed due to staff shortages or staff illness etc.

Have you asked about the after effects of partial removal - if you had that done would you still need ongoing checking every 6 months or would it just be a blip in your life to recover and then get back to normal activities.

I know a lot of people will think of the short term pain for long term gain. But for you when you were told what was your initial reaction? is there any harm in asking for a week to think about it? If they don't need an answer right now it gives you a chance to sit with the decisions you have and go with whatever feels most comfortable for you and your lifestyle.

I hope that helps, please let us know what you decide...

    Take Care

  • Hi,

Thanks for the reply. Must admit one day I decide to have the partial nephrectomy and the next day wake up and think I will just monitor it. Obviously the main fear of not having the op and it spreading is the thing I'm struggling to get my ahead around. I've had a lung CT and waiting for results and then will see consultant but still sat here undecided.

If anyone has had a partial nephrectomy would appreciate some advice.

    Regards,

    Rob
