L5 secondary cancer.

Hello,

I had my first round with head and neck cancer in 2008 when I was 56 which was dealt with by surgery and radiation treatment. I suffered more from the radiation treatment than the original problem.

I have a PEG tube fitted as I'm nil by mouth following several long hospital stays. My voice is destroyed through the radiation.

I have now been diagnosed with cancer of the spine following a recent PET. I have a red glowing vertebrae!

I was told that indicates stage 4 as the cancer moved from the original site.
I only have one question, as reality hasn't dawned on me yet.
What is the survival rate in a typical situation? I have already been informed that Chemo, radiation and surgery are not an option.

I simply know that I'm not gomn

  • Hello Cadex

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently been told that the cancer has returned and is now in your spine. It's obviously a difficult time for you and it's understandable that you have questions about the next steps.

We have some information about secondary bone cancer on our website which you may find helpful. Hopefully, there will be some treatment options available that will help keep things stable for you.

We do have a team of nurses here at CRUK that you can contact for information and support. If someone is able to call them on your behalf they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040. Alternatively, you can post in our Ask the Nruses topic area or contact them by email

    Best wishes,
