Stage 3 melanoma - immunotherapy advice please

Hi there, I got the results of my wle and sentinel node biopsy today- stage 3 melanoma. But apparently only a "minimal" amount was found in the 2 nodes removed.  My consultant has requested a PET scan and BRAF gene test and once those results are back i will start immunotherapy. I don't know of saying whose had this particular treatment. Please could you let me know what to expect.... side effects? Hair loss? How long do you have it for? Is it iv or tablets? So many questions now that I've left the hospital. Anything I can do to prepare my body for treatment? Any advice would be gratefully received. Thankyou

  • Hi Sarahlou,

I'm sorry that you have been diagnosed with melanoma and it's Stage 3,it will be a shock but hopefully I can answer some of your questions.

I was diagnosed Stage 3 12 years ago, long before adjuvant drug therapy was made available for Stage 3 patients (3 years ago). There is a lot to answer with regard to your questions so I will answer a little here and then send you a private message with more detailed information.

Side effects - there are several (but hair loss isn't common although hair thinning may occur (it usually rectifies itself post treatment). The thing to remember is that not everyone suffers side effects or may only get mild ones. I will cover it in more detail in a message.

The drug treatment is for 2 years unless severe side effects mean it has to stop earlier. The type of treatment offered will depend on your BRAF status (covered in a message). It can be in tablet or IV form but I think it depends on the set up at the hospital and which drug therapy you will be given. Preparation for the treatment - again I will cover in a message.

I hope this helps for the moment & that I can send you the rest by pm. Meanwhile, good luck and you aren't alone,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)
