Elective mastectomy

I have recently been diagnosed with cancer in my left breast, I have advised my consultant that I wish to go ahead with a double mastectomy but he is discouraging this and has said it will need to be discussed further with another team and I will have to justify to them my reasons for this. I am making this choice to prolong my life as even though there is no cancer in my right breast now, that may not be the case in the future and yes it might not come back but I know I will always have that worry in the back of my mind and know deep down it will never allow me to enjoy my life as I should when all the chemo and radiotherapy is over.
I understand the point of view of the consultant but surely my thoughts, concerns and feelings must be taken into account too.
Has anyone else had this problem and what did they do to get their consultant to agree to their wishes.

    Hi Macymae,

A very warm welcome to our forum. I am sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Do you know what typeof breast cancer you have/  Doctors are reluctant to remove a healthy breast, as they say that statistics show that this doesn't decrease the chance of recurrence. This is particularly the case if the cancer is not an aggressive one and is caught in the early stages.

I had Mucinous cancer 12 years ago and was told that it was unlikely to spread. Following a lumpectomy, I found a lump in my other breast 6 months after surgery. Fortunately this was benign, even though it was larger than my original lump. Almost a year to the date of my surgery I discovered a second lump in my original breast and this time it was another bout of cancer.

I was fortunate that my surgeon was happy to do the double mastectomy, because he iwas pretty certain that my second lump was cancerous, until the biopsy result came back. Speak to your doctor about the likelihood of recurrence, with and without a double mastectomy. Once you have all the figures to hand, you will find it easier to reach a final decision.

Whatever you decide, I hope that it is the right decision for you.

Please keep in touch and let us know what you decide. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
