Waiting for MRI, newly diagnosed

Just over a month ago I found a lump on my left breast, I was referred to the hospital to have a surgeon examine it and she did a fine needle biopsy and sent me to have a Mammogram and Ultrasound. During my ultrasound the Radiologist told me the lump looked very suspicious and was most likely cancer, I was absolutely devastated. I'm 37 years old and have a 4 year old boy and a 7 month old baby girl. I have since had the results from my fine needle biopsy and it is indeed cancer, but I won't have an official diagnosis till I receive the results of my more detailed biopsy which was done later. I was referred for an urgent MRI last Thursday but have still not heard anything and I'm now freaking out that the cancer is growing and spreading I was told by the Radiologist that the cancer is nowhere else and not in my lymph nodes, but that was over a week ago, how long could it take to spread? I have private health insurance through my work, I guess I'm just wondering how long people usually wait to get their MRI and if it would be worth calling my insurance to go private?

  • Hi Jools84,

I'm sorry to hear about your situation and I can imagine this must be unsettling especially without all the details. I know it's easier said than done but try not to worry too much about the risks of waiting - it's quite normal to have a bit of a wait; as you have an urgent referral you should expect to get an appointment within two weeks.

However if you remain concerned, perhaps you could discuss with your doctor about potential timescales so you know what to expect. You could then compare this with the option of going private, if you feel this would help.

If you'd like to talk this through with one of our nurses at all, you can reach them on 0808 800 4040 (Monday-Friday, 9-5).

    Wishing you all the best,
