Lymphoma and hypercalcemia of malignancy

My father in law collapsed while doing his shopping and was rushed to hospital. He was extremely confused and we first thought maybe a concussion. However the doctor is saying he is 99.9% sure it is lymphoma alongside hypercalcemia of malignancy but he needs his kidney function to improve in order to give him a ct with contrast to confirm. We are so confused because the doctor pretty much told us his prognosis is very poor and he is so ill and more than likely will not make it home but is waiting to do this test to confirm. Our heads are spinning. We are 5 days since he told us he if he doesn't improve within 3 to 5 days he will not. He is sitting up in his bed today but still not coherant and his calcium levels are coming down slightly. They need his kidney function to go from less than 30% to 40% in order to give him a scan to confirm. Has anyone ever had this happen before? My father in law is still so strong and does not look sick, as in, he is not gaunt looking. We just don't know what to think and we are not getting definite answers from anyone at the hospital. Could they have the diagnosis wrong? Has anyone ever been through similar? Any help is much appreciated. Sorry if my post is all over the place, our heads are just spinning.
