Will I get ED from my treatment for prostate cancer?

I have been recently diagnosed with prostate cancer. My Gleason Score is 9 and the cancer is locally advanced. I am awaiting a hormone injection next week and then am probably facing chemotherapy and then radiotherapy. I am 61 and have an active sex life and fear the possibility of getting ED from the treatment. Is this inevitable? Is there anything that I can do to maintain a sex life or do I need to write this part of my life off?

  • Hello BFHC

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Understandably it's a difficult time for you and you have many questions.

Some treatments for prostate cancer can cause problems for some men with erectile dysfunction but I'd really encourage you to speak to the Consultant and/or nurse specialist as there may be treatment options available to you if needed.

Prostate Cancer UK has a specialist sexual support service and it may be worth getting in touch with them as well to discuss your concerns. It's also available for your partner to access if they have any concerns they'd like to talk through.

I hope this helps and send my best wishes for your treatment.
