I'm afraid of skin cancer

I have a lot of moles and I am constantly afraid that one of them may become skin cancer. tell me, what should I do to get rid of this obsessive fear? Thanks

  • Hi [@AnnyG]‍

just wanted to say hello and also if you are worried about your moles then please see your gp. I've had a mole on my back for years and now for past few weeks I noticed it was itching a lot and sore so went to see gp. I was referred to dermatology under the 2 week rule last week Monday. They rang me today and I have an appointment tomorrow afternoon. I have struggled for the past week a i am so scared I have melanoma cancer and that it has spread as I have been having left body pain and fuzzy vision but I don't know if this is due to me being anxious or there is more to it. I have also found loads of dark brown spots under my breasts which I only noticed when I did a full body check a week ago. So I understand what you mean. It's the fear of cancer. Please do get your moles looked at if you are worried

  • Hi,

If you have a particular mole you are worried about, see your GP. They will hopefully calm your fears but if they refer you to dermatology they will take a quick 'sweep' of your other moles to see if anything stands out as suspicious.

If you don't have a particular mole to get checked out or your GP thinks it looks fine, I think you may feel better if you have some 'control' of your moles. I therefore suggest that you download a mole check app - you can use this on any moles you are worried about and it will tell you if any look suspicious and need checking by a doctor. There are a few on the market but I hear that the Skinvision app gets good reviews. You could also pay for private mole mapping. There are clinics around the country that provide this private service - they photograph all your moles and their location on the body each year and check for any changes in the photos.

    I hope this helps,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)

  • Thank you for your words! I went to the doctor and he told me that my moles are not dangerous, but they require observation, and I also began to read information about applications and devices that help in diagnosis. To be honest , I don't trust applications that analyze moles by photo. I have heard about devices that measure moles using a weak current(like a smart watch) and give the result. Maybe you've heard of them? I was advised Nota mole by American friends and I am now thinking about it

  • nice to meet you! yes, I go to the doctor and even removed a few moles on my back, and now I have calmed down a little. and how do you track moles between doctor's appointments?

  • [@AnnyG]‍ hi I've got my appointment today at 3.10 at the hospital so will see what it said. Absolutely petrified at what's coming ahead.

  • I wish your all to be well! and the moles were just moles

  • The photo apps weren't very good to begin with but they are getting a lot better now. Perhaps have a look at MelanomaUK's website or give them a ring for advice. They are a melanoma charity who are on the ball when it comes to mole monitoring advice. https://www.melanomauk.org.uk/

  • thank you for your answer! I'll contact them
