DCIS high grade at 35

Hi.... I am wondering if there are others in a similar situation or who has experienced something similar?

I am 35 and was recently diagnosed with high grade DCIS on my right breast. I have had: ultrasound, biopsy, MRI and DBT.

I now have 10 days to decide on either a single mastectomy with reconstruction OR lumpectomy which will be 40% of my breast and reconstruction from the side of my back or if the side is not successful then the muscle from my back. The doctor is positive a lumpectomy would be a good option.

Has anyone had a similar situation or is going through a similar diagnosis?

  • Hi Rach,

usually cases get discussed in a multi discipline meeting in which your case gets reviewed by several specialists

    surgeons,oncologist. Nurse, physio etc etc.

They discuss history, results grade location, surgery treatment etc etc.

This joint decision will be decided the best outcome, regarding surgery and treatment plan. Which should have been explained and asked your overall opinion.  I've been reading up on some info (only via google tho) Surgeons like to more serve healthy breast tissue and lots of studies have been done into risk of lumpectomy v's mastectomy outcome.

You could ask for a discussion with your breast care nurse. They are often guided by MDT outcome and maybe could give you some more answers to your questions.

However the ultimate deduction is yours.

Best of luck either way ;)
