Ovarian cyst-possibly cancerous

My Ca 125 test results are raised. I'm due to have a laparoscopy to remove the ovarian cyst in a few weeks time. I'm struggling with symptoms like bloating, feeling tired, back pain, lack of energy. Its a dermoid ovarian cyst so a biopsy needs to be done on it to check if it's malignant.

I'm going out of my mind with worry-what if it is malignant? I've been told that it's unlikely but that there still is a possibility it could be. I feel like my GP and gynaecologist are downplaying it to try to keep me calm but that deep down, they suspect cancer. I just have this gnawing feeling about it and my sleep is being disrupted-I wake up really early in the morning and sometimes have nightmares because of this.

  • Hey

Just created a profile to reply to your post as I'm in a similar position with the same symptoms. My cyst is 7cm and Ca125 level raised, wasn't too worried about it being cancerous until a consultant told me I'd been discussed in a multi disciplinary meeting and decided they needed another blood test and MRI scan which I've had this week, due for surgery to drain it Wednesday but so worried the results will come back as something more serious :( I've also had trouble sleeping, I know none of this helps your situation but know you're not alone - also feel like the specialists are avoiding talking about 'cancer' which somehow makes me more worried!
Do you have a date for your next appointment/next step?

    sending best wishes x

  • Hi sugarsnap3

I've just joined the forum after reading your post and thought I'd reassure you

On 2/8/21 I was diagnosed with a 5cm dermoid cyst on my left ovary and a endo thickening of 24mm.My CA125 was normal .my ultrasound was inconclusive due to bowel gas . so I was sent for CT which diagnosed the thickening and cyst .I was put on the 2 week wait pathway which scared me to death.

I had to have my hysterscopy under GA as my cervix was stenosis and he couldn't get the scope up without me suffering pain this stenosis was  due to a previous cone biopsy I had 10 years ago for CIN 3 pre cancer cells in the cervix

On 16/8/21 My gynecologist removed both ovaries and tubes aswell as completing a laproscopsy to obtain a biopsy under GA . I am now awaiting the results .I had all your symptoms too.

I am 53 and to be honest I was dreading having both tubes and ovarys removed but it's not been too bad

Completed ascacday case - incision in my belly button and 2 small incisions on my bikini line .it was really painful the first few days but once you start to move about it gets better.I'm day 7 post surgery and now that cyst is out I do feel better than I did .

once the cyst is removed you will feel much better so try not to worry about the CA125 because cysts and endometrisis can raise the CA125 .take each day as it comes it's hard and  I was in a right panic but whatever my outcome I'm ready to fight it .

    good luck take care

  • Hi,

Thanks..I'm having surgery in September to remove it. My Ca125 is raised but I was told that can happen with benign cysts too. My ultrasound and MRI results appear to show that it's benign but my gynaecologist has said that it will need to be biopsied to make sure so there's still a chance it's malignant..unlikely though as it's a dermoid cyst and they're usually benign.

I'm relieved that it's being removed tbh as the abdominal bloating has gotten quite bad. I called the cancer phone line and was told to try to focus on what I can control..to wait til I have the surgery and that the waiting is often the worst part. I'm trying to distract myself with exercise..obviously it's still in the back of my mind but I'm finding that walking is helping with the bloating. Of course, a lot of the time I don't want to go for the walk!

Sending best wishes to you as well.

  • Hi,

Thanks for sharing your experience. I may have to get an ovary removed during surgery. I've been told that it's unlikely to impact fertility as I would still have another ovary but it's still not great. I'm going to be fitted with a mirena coil..I have fibroids too but they're small so they don't need to be removed. The fibroids led to a lot of heavy bleeding in between periods. I'll need a general anaesthetic too and I'll be in hospital for two days as it's a large cyst.

Part of me is being practical and trying to focus on eating well and exercising before the surgery to try to cut down my recovery time if at all possible. I have a lot of worries around the surgery, recovery time, how long before I can exercise again etc and then obviously around the biopsy but I'm trying to distract myself at least until the surgery and just focus on what I can control. I was told to focus on what I can control by a nurse on the cancer line and I was talking to her for about an hour so I think that chat helped reassure me a bit. Not totally of course but just to have someone who understands the medical side of things. I think that's why I posted here because a lot of people don't understand what it's like.

Take care of yourself too x
