Testicular Cancer

Hi everyone,

Had my op on the 9th August for suspected testicular cancer following an ultrasound. Had a CT scan and a further blood test since the op but still not heard anymore from Hospital - I chased yesterday but was told the tumour can take 2-3 weeks to come back and they piece it all together for next steps.

I know my bloods before the op showed cancer makers but no idea on numbers as not been told.

I am recovering well and mentally I am quite tough but found the last two days a struggle with my mind wandering of what lays ahead.

Cheers,

Nick

  • Hi Nick

I hope you're recovering well from your surgery. I know that this period of waiting for the post-op results can be really difficult and it's natural to feel anxious about what may, or may not, lie ahead.

Can I suggest you give our team of nurses a call? I know that talking to someone at times like this really can help and I'm sure they will be happy to chat things through with you and try and offer some advice, information, and support to help you through the next few weeks. If you'd like to chat with them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

Keep in touch Nick and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Thanks Jenn - the nurse on the Helpline were great.

Recovery is slow but getting better day by day. Had op two weeks today.

Still nothing from Hospital regarding next steps though.

  • Hi Nick

I'm so pleased you gave the nurses a call and that it was helpful. It's good to hear that you're progressing slowly day by day.

If you've not heard from the hospital then there's no harm in giving them a call to ask about the next steps. Maybe the Urology specialist nurse or the Consultant's secretary will be able to give you a time frame of when you can expect to hear some news. Give them a call tomorrow and see what they say.

  • I have been told that their MDT meetings are Wednesday but they were still waiting the stuff back from histology when I asked on Friday.

Apparently, I am being tracked so that is a positive.

  • Fingers crossed that you hear something soon then Nick.

Keep in touch and let us know.

  • Still no news - the MDT meetings are today but not sure if that's needed to tell me next steps / results.

I haven't chased up as was told the histology report could be 2-3 weeks (3 weeks on Monday 30th since Op).

  • I have a slight update - Dawn (secretary) said my histology report came back yesterday afternoon and I will be discussed at the MDT on Wednesday next week.

I will then be called in for appointment Friday / early week after to discuss results and also to look at how wound is healing

They don’t give any results over the phone and don’t tell me any other stats like bloods, etc

Not sure how to feel as the MDT meeting will be 23 days after surgery so fairly anxious.

  • Hi Nick

I'm glad to hear that you now finally have a date to see the Consultant. I know that waiting for news from the MDT can be a really anxious time but it sounds like they now have all the information they need for the meeting on Wednesday and you should have a clear picture of things shortly afterward.

I wanted to try and connect you up with another new member here [@Jimmy12]‍ who has also recently had surgery and is now waiting for his first appointment with the Consultant. I've tagged you into his thread and it may be that the two of you are able to offer each other some support.

Keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

  • Thanks Jenn - my Hospital don't advise over the phone.

So I should be called in on Friday after the MDT meeting tomorrow. My understanding is they call tomorrow to tell you what time you will be up

  • I have some positive news

The tumour was cancerous but it is what is called a Stage Seminoma so it's the earliest stage of testicular cancer.

I will need to see the orcologist in Brighton to determine next steps but the nurse thinks it is monitoring only but may need preventative chemo.

Appontment is not until Tuesday at hospital to assess wound.

I am still in a bit of pain but feel very relieved.
