Breast US showed benign but IHC stain showed breast primary

Mum's IHC stain of pleural biopsy showed adenocarcinoma with breast as primary. However, the breast ultrasound and mammogram showed benign cysts in breasts. Really confusing! Is it malignant? Is it benign? I was told they need to get a medical oncologist for advice.  Then CT abdo and Ca125 and HE4 showed ovarian cancer. Plus, with her high platelets, the JAK2 test showed positive for gene mutation and today haematologist prescribed hydroxyurea to be started.

Also saw the OB-gynae today and said Mum (68 y/o) is for total hysterectomy but because Mum has been on Rivaroxiban for about a month, need to have clearance from haematologist before proceeding with surgery.

Too much to take in for me, I cannot imagine how Mum feels about this news. Mum lives abroad and the only way I get information is via calls/texts. As much as I want to be there for my Mum, being away long distance and with half reliable internet connection back home makes it really difficult...

Has anyone else been in this situation where there are conflicting results - one test says benign breast cysts and the other test says malignant, and breast is the primary?  Would really appreciate any information or advice. Thank you.

  • Hi Moen,

It sounds as if there is a lot of confusion here and I'm sure this must be really tough to try to process.

I hope she is able to get all the necessary information and next steps soon. I can understand the distance must be making things more difficult but I'm sure she appreciates you being available for support as much as you are able to.

Hopefully you'll receive further replies here soon if there are others with similar experience to share.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
