Skin cancer - how can I check the rest of my body?

Recently diagnosed with skin cancer (bcc) on the tip of my nose, so MOHs surgery is being planned. I'm gutted to be getting facial scarring and have a lot of complex feeling as my mother died from cancer years ago.

The real concern I have is that I only noticed this wired bit of skin because of its placement. How do I check all the other areas that may have anomalies? I'm covered in moles and freckles! Honestly even the doctor said they thought it was nothing but did a biopsy to be on the safe side because I was concerned. I'm not OK with them glancing over my skin and saying, everything seems fine, because that's what they thought about this cancer too.

any tips?!

  • Hi there,

Sorry to hear about your BCC diagnosis and I do hope the surgery goes well for you.

If you can afford to you could go for a full skin check by a dermatologist to get the peace of mind that there is nothing else of concern on your body currently. This usually costs somewhere around £200. If you have a lot of moles then it may be worth getting mole mapping done. I don't know too much about that but I think they take photos of all your moles so you have a record of them all and it's easier to see changes over time.

In any case you should perform skin checks on yourself regularly so that you can find anything early. Take photos of your skin with a ruler next to any moles or marks so you can monitor the size, and get someone else to take photos of your back. Make sure you know the warnings signs of skin cancers and look for any changes or anything new appearing on your skin. There's some good info on the Skcin website (a charity dedicated to skin cancer prevention, awareness and early detection) on what to look for and how to check your skin so you could have a look there for some tips:

    Good luck!
