Breast surgery - which surgery should I chose?

Hi everyone,

I was diagnosed with breast cancer on the 7th July this year. I am 35 and have been given the choice of 2 surgery procedures - Theraputic Mammaplasty or Local perforator flap based reconstruction.

I know either of these is going to be hard but I just wanted to ask peoples thoughts/experience if either of these have been an option for you and which did you pick and why? I really don't know which would be best

  • I have recently had a lumpectomy and lymph nodes removed with a reconstruction. The op was fine and I was back to manual work 3 weeks later. Although I have bn left with 'cording' down the arm where the lymph nodes were taken out. Something they didn't explain to be pre op. Unfortunately, there was more cancer left when the margins were examined.

knowing this I would of opted for a mastectomy as now I have to go thru the whole process again. Debating chemo now as I really don't want it and will probably opt out of it.

    good luck xx

  • Hi

I was diagnosed in May. I was given the choice too. My area to be removed was quite large.

I was worried if I had a lumpectomy I'd have no boob left. However, my nurse explained that if possible they recommend keeping as much of your boob as poss.

I went for a lumpectomy in the end. I figured that if they didn't get clear margins then I may have to consider a masectomy as a second operation.

They got clear margins and my surgeon has worked wonders. In fact, my poorly boob is more perky than my non-poorly one. My cancer was on the outer side of my left breast so I still have exactly the same cleavage etc.

I have a scar that runs over top of my nipple and down the side of my boob to my chest. Apart from one tiny area it has healed amazingly well. I am so pleased with the decision I made :)

Whatever you decide will be the right choice.

Hope it all goes well. My treatment has all gone smoothly.

    Love Sarah xx

  • Thank you for your reply and I'm sorry to hear you have to go through it again.

I'm all new to this so I'm not sure how many reconstruction options there is. Did you have the flap or reconstruction with reduction or something else?

    Xx

  • I had the flap . Fat was taken from my side and put in the breast. The breast looks ok tbh it just doesn't feel the same. But is early days as it's still quite numb
