Terminal diagnosis

Hi I'm new to this forum. I have recently been diagnosed with small bowel cancer and liver metastases. I was told on Tuesday they couldn't cure it and I had 2 years at the most with chemo. Starting on Folfox in a couple of weeks. I'm trying to come to terms with it all but it's so hard. I'm also so nervous about the chemo and the side effects. Has anyone else been on this chemo? How did you get on with the side effects?

I have just read a post by Mare who is still alive 10 years on from her diagnosis. Congratulations. That's amazing and has given me new hope for the future. I'm going to fight this for as long as I can. My daughter is getting married next year and I want to see my granchildren!

  • Hello Ali53

I'm sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis. It's obviously a very difficult time for you but you sound as if you're going to step forwards into treatment with a positive mindset and I know that this will stand you in really good stead.

I'm going to tag in our lovely [@gruntifen]‍ aka David who has previously been through treatment for bowel cancer which was later found to have spread to his liver. He's a great support to many in our community and hopefully he will be able to share his experience with you.

It's understandable that you're nervous about the FOLFOX, I think most everyone who faces chemo feels that way. Do keep in touch with the team giving you your treatment about any side effects that you do experience. They have a wealth of knowledge and expertise and I'm sure will do all they can to ease any issues that you experience.

You're also most welcome to call our nurses and talk things through with them. They're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

Keep in touch Ali53 and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Thankyou Jenn for your kind reply. Its good to know there is support out there. I have also had 2 kidney transplants and very nervous about chemo and the effect it will have on my transplanted kidney. I will have two major stresses, staying alive and keeping my kidney. Fingers crossed all will be ok.

Take care yourself and I will keep you updated
