My dad has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer

Hi , my dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last week , we are yet to find out the stage and waiting for an appointment for a pet scan .. I'm starting to worry it's been a week now , when I spoke to the cancer nurse she told me 6 months without treatment and 9-12 with I've read the notes and it says recommended palliative chemo and that it is not curative , I'm so worried about how much pain he may be in , I got onto the GP who prescribed him a low co codamol he said it isn't working :( I feel so scared an worried about everything and everyone my children included and especially my mum it's just like  living nightmare right now

  • Hi,

ive just joined the site and saw your post.

My dad too, it's extremely worrying and heart breaking to see them in pain. My dad was diagnosed last Tuesday with locally advanced metastatic pancreatic tail tumour (liver Mets T4M1) involving the proximal stomach, duodenum and numerous  liver metastases. We met with the medical oncologist today and they suggest palliative chemotherapy, this would give him an extra 3 months or maybe 6. The chemo is intravenous and my dad watched mum suffer so not sure what he will do. I would just trying to go to the appointment if you can or to be on a call link so it's another pair of ears. Sadly without chemo could be 3 months or maybe 6mths.

My dad has lost weight and has a terrible pain in his side (stomach to the left). He doesn’t have any other symptoms with jaundice or back pain. I'm praying the drugs start to work this week because the first dose she prescribed hasn't helped him. Dad is currently taking two slow releasing morphine tablets am and pm. Steroids dexamethasone in morning, paracetamol every 4hrs (max  8 in 24hrs) also, liquid morphine to top up with 10mg 5ml. Mum writes everything down when the drugs are taken so  dad doesn't forget. Also records a pain barrier 1-10 at points in the day.

Unfortunately due to my mum also suffering with breast cancer we thought dad was stressed about mum which had an affect on his bowels. He contacted the doctor and A/E in May due to terrible pain but the just prescribed sachets to help him go to toilet. ‍♀️Obviously this didn’t work so our family doctor pushed everything through quickly. I feel so sorry for mum, she had a mastectomy and chemo so she could have more time wine with dad and now this. 55 years they've been together. Crazy this time last year they were healthy and walking miles across fields and down at the coast.
