Oh no

Hi, just had a PSA reading of 19.49 and referred for a bone scan, then all being well Radical Prostatectomy as soon as possible. Nervous about the outcome with incontinence and erectile problems. In total shock... I haven't had time to discuss with anyone, I was supposed to be on Active Surveillance but no one checked in over 14 months until I took it upon myself to get my bloods done. Yeah they'll all blame covid, but getting angry won't make it better. Now I'm a bit scared and confused it's come to this.

  • Hello Cully

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently been told your PSA has risen and that now you will need surgery. It's obviously a very worrying time for you and understandable that you're feeling anxious about some of the possible side effects of surgery.

We do have a number of gents here on the forum who have been through treatment for prostate cancer and hopefully some of them will post to share their experiences with you.

It can really help to talk things through with someone and I'd suggest giving our team of nurses a call to chat to them whilst you're waiting on the next steps. They're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040. I'm sure they'll be able to offer some advice, information, and support.

Keep in touch Cully and let us know how you get on with the scan.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi. My stepdad had a PSA of around 100 and 11 years on after radiotherapy and hormone treatment - his PSA is undetectable so just wondered if you'd chosen to have the op as there are other treatement options available.

  • Well, I saw a new consultant yesterday and he said my NM Whole Body and CT Scans were clear, so good news and he basically told me I don't need surgery (unless I want it!!). Firstly he wants another PSA test in case the 19.49 was just a spike with cycling - 2,000 miles since January and I've lost 10 kilo's. Then he needs to check my last 2 MRI's side by side to see if the tumours have grown. Miraculously he said if my PSA is 12 or 13 and the tumours haven't grown they may just leave me on active surveillence! So no cycling for a week and fingers crossed. However if my PSA IS still at 19 or 20 then he suggests radiotherapy as opposed to radical surgery..... Confused? You bet, one consultant said surgery was the best option, the new one says radiotherapy is better at my age. The first consultant said my cancer was too advance for Brachytherapy, the new one says it isn't, but hey, the outcome looks better than 2 weeks ago. Let's wait for my PSA results and another MDT meeting. And I'm happy they are looking at different options
