Is it possible to prevent lymphoedema?

Hi there,

I'm likely to have cancerous lymph nodes removed and a mastectomy and have been told that lymphoedema is common afterwards. Is that people's experience? Is it possible to prevent? I have myxoedema (hypothyroidism) anyway.

Grateful for any advice!

  • Hello Jennet

I'm sorry to hear that you're waiting on surgery. It's understandable that you're feeling anxious about the possibility of some lymphedema after the surgery and I wanted to give you some links that you may find helpful.

We've information about lymphedema and cancer on our website which you may find helpful and I'd certainly recommend having a look at the Lymphoedema Support Network website as well. In particular, you may find this page helpful.

Your breast care nurse should refer you to the local lymphoedema service if you have one following your surgery but if you have any concerns don't be afraid to speak to your BCN for advice.

I hope that all goes smoothly and your recovery goes well.

    Best wishes,
